The Story Behind How Phil Dunster Ended Up Playing Jamie Tartt On Ted Lasso Is Unexpected, And The Author Of The Show’s Book Told Me Why He Loved It

As a dedicated Ted Lasso fan with a penchant for behind-the-scenes stories, I must admit that the evolution of Jamie Tartt is one of the most intriguing tales to emerge from this delightful series. It’s like discovering that the Mona Lisa was once a stick figure sketch – mind-blowing!

When I think about Jamie Tartt’s funniest lines in Ted Lasso, I immediately read them in that iconic Mancunian accent Phil Dunster puts on for the character. However, that wasn’t always the plan, initially AFC Richmond’s diva star player was supposed to be totally different. However, as I learned from reading Jeremy Egner’s book Believe and speaking to the author about it, there’s a wild story behind how the character of Jamie evolved and how Dunster ended up landing the part.

The series Believe is full of anecdotes about the audition process for the Ted Lasso cast, and among these tales, Phil Dunster’s audition story particularly captivated me. This was also the casting tale that left Jeremy Egner most astonished when I inquired about which one surprised him the most. As he related the account mentioned in the book, he pointed out that initially, the character Jamie was intended to be of South American origin.

In fact, in the book, he wrote:

Initially, the creators imagined Jamie, played by Phil Dunster, as a flamboyant Latin American footballer rather than an arrogant yet charming English one. However, through persuasion, Dunster managed to change their perception and shape the character differently.

In a twist of events, Dani Rojas, originally a Latin American player, was portrayed by Cristo Fernández in the movie. Before reaching this point, though, they were on a quest to discover their Jamie character. Interestingly, Phil Dunster, who eventually earned an Emmy nomination for his convincing performance as the footballer, kept resurfacing as their potential choice for Jamie.

In the book, it is mentioned that after trying out using a Spanish accent, Dunster was instructed to choose another accent not his own, one that symbolized British footballers. He opted for a Manchester accent, which proved crucial in securing the role. (Without the accent, lines like “I am he” and “It’s just rubbish” might not have been as effective.)

The director of Ted Lasso’s pilot, Tom Marshall, told Egner why he believed that too, explaining:

I have a vivid recollection of Phil Dunster’s audition. I can’t quite recall the scripted lines, but let me rephrase it: During the auditions, we met an actor who attempted an Italian accent. Then came Phil, who surprised us by saying, ‘I’ve been trying it in a Manchester accent.’ Afterward, I distinctly remember discussing with Bill [Lawrence] and Jason [Sudeikis], expressing my admiration for how spot-on he was. The Manchester accent perfectly captured the essence of Jamie Tartt for me, reminiscent of the Oasis music scene from Manchester, known for its cocky, confident vibe.

In our conversation with the author, he referenced a particular tale from Marshall, as well as the Manchester-inspired ideas he had in mind. The accent is captivating, not just because of its charm, but also because it mirrors the confident demeanor they aimed for in the character of Jamie, thanks to these influences.

Egner found the connections intriguing and enlightening, deepening his comprehension of the players, as he shared with me.

It’s intriguing how certain links can make it clear that someone is perfect for a part, and that situation served as an excellent illustration of this concept.

I’m thoroughly captivated by Ted Lasso, and it’s intriguing to learn about the behind-the-scenes creation of such a wonderful show. Moreover, the evolution of Jamie’s character, portrayed brilliantly by Phil Dunster, was particularly engaging for me. His performance was so compelling that I believe the series wouldn’t be the same without him. It’s astonishing to discover that the storyline of this character, initially Jamie Tartt, started with Dani Rojas – an unexpected twist indeed!

Yet, after a series of steps and Phil Dunster experimenting with a fresh accent, we ended up with this remarkable character and an engaging BTS tale.
