As a die-hard fan of Stranger Things since its inception, I have to say that this latest reveal about the upcoming season is nothing short of exhilarating! Ever since the Upside Down first invaded our screens back in 2016, I’ve been hooked. I remember binge-watching all eight episodes of Season 1 in a single weekend and feeling like I had just uncovered a long-lost piece of my own childhood.
The day akin to “Stranger Things” has passed once more, leaving enthusiasts anticipating a sneak peek into season 5 of this Netflix sensation. However, unlike our wishes, no such teaser was released. Yet, we did glean some intriguing details about the concluding season. For instance, it’s been confirmed that there will be eight episodes this year, one less than Season 4 which had a total of nine spread across two volumes. Furthermore, the titles for each episode have been revealed. As with previous seasons, these titles are cryptic enough to maintain suspense, but I’ve come up with some entertaining speculations regarding what we might encounter based on them.
The official social media accounts for Netflix’s best show shared the information in a fun video set to the title sequence and even reminded fans that this would be our last trip to Hawkins, Indiana. Just in case you’re too busy to watch the short video, here are the titles in order:
- Episode 1: “The Crawl”
- Episode 2: “The Vanishing Of ____”
- Episode 3: “The Turnbow Trap”
- Episode 4: “Sorcerer”
- Episode 5: “Shock Jock”
- Episode 6: “Escape From Camazotz”
- Episode 7: “The Bridge”
- Episode 8: “The Rightside Up”
For some time now, we’ve been aware of the title for Episode 1, as it was revealed during last year’s Stranger Things Day and a sneak peek of the opening scene was also shared. Other titles have been leaked online through different fan sources. However, with the confirmation of these titles, I can now openly discuss my theories about what might happen in each episode.
Could Holly Wheeler Be The One Who Vanishes In Episode 2 Because Of Vecna?
In the past four seasons of “Stranger Things”, Holly Wheeler hasn’t had a significant part due to her age. Interestingly, the role was recast for Season 5 with Nell Fisher (from “Evil Dead Rise”). Given that her siblings have been deeply involved in Upside Down affairs, it seems logical that Holly might get drawn in as well. An intriguing way for this to happen could be her disappearance, similar to how Will went missing at the start of the series.
Pondering this, it seems unlikely that any significant characters from “Stranger Things” would be confined within the Upside Down throughout Season 5. On the other hand, it’s also improbable for an insignificant character to vanish without a trace. Holly appears to be an ideal choice because her disappearance would add a sense of urgency and heightened tension for the kids to locate her promptly. It could even result in poignant sibling moments between Mike and Nancy, which have been somewhat scarce in recent seasons.
It’s worth noting that Nancy mentioned that the villain Vecna revealed to her a vision of his monsters targeting the whole Wheeler family. This could potentially be the initial stage of his wicked scheme.
Episode 4 Is Going To Be All About Will
During the past summer, it was essentially confirmed by the Duffer Brothers that Season 5 will primarily focus on the story of Will Byers. Since his disappearance served as the foundation for the series, it’s only appropriate that he plays a significant part in the potential defeat of Vecna and The Upside Down forever. Additionally, we know that when playing Dungeons and Dragons, Will often chooses to play the role of a Wizard, earning him the nickname “Will the Wise.
In simpler terms, while Wizards and Sorcerers may not be identical, they have enough commonalities that making Episode 4, titled “The Sorcerer,” heavily focused on the character Will, seems logical. This assumption is further supported by Noah Schnapp’s farewell to Castle Byers fort during yesterday’s Stranger Things Day, suggesting we’re in for a Will-centric episode, and the title “The Sorcerer” certainly fits well with this prediction.
What Or Who Is Camazotz, And What Could It Mean For Episode 6
In contrast to the generally clear titles for other episodes in Season 5 of “Stranger Things”, Episode 6’s title, “Escape From Camaztoz”, left me curious. A quick internet search revealed that Camaztoz is associated with an anthropomorphic leaf-nosed bat, which held significance in Mayan rituals, particularly those involving sacrifices.
Without a doubt, my thoughts began whirling, and I instantly recalled Eddie Munson, who viewers have speculated isn’t truly deceased since Season 4 Volume 2 concluded. One prevalent fan hypothesis is that Eddie will reappear in Season 5 as Kas the Bloody-Handed, a character from Dungeons & Dragons who acts as Vecna’s right-hand man until he betrays him. This theory certainly seems plausible, but thus far, there have been no indications of a vampire-like character emerging in the series.
In another interpretation, “Camaztoz” could serve as a means for Eddie’s reappearance. Given that he was slain by Demobats and likely left behind in the Upside Down when the group exited through the gates, it seems fitting that his return might be associated with these creatures. After all, what could be more suitable than him appearing as an anthropomorphic bat among Vecna’s horde of demogorgons and Demobats?
Camaztoz” isn’t merely an ancient Mayan bat; it’s also the name of the planet from the book “A Wrinkle in Time” where IT, the antagonist with a brain-like shape, resides and exerts control over everyone on the planet. Since the writers of Stranger Things shared a photo of this Newbery Award-winning classic novel back in April 2023, it could be a potential connection for Season 5.
In a different phrasing: It’s unlikely that the characters will unexpectedly journey to an imaginary planet in this episode. Instead, I believe the focus will be on Vecna and his power over minds. Particularly, I predict that Episode 6 may depict Max emerging from her coma following her successful break free from Vecna’s control.
Based on sneak peeks from the Duffer Brothers and photos they’ve released, we can expect Max to feature in Season 5 somehow. Given this information, it seems likely that she will reappear in a dramatic manner. Additionally, considering that episode 6 has often been a high-stakes episode in the past, it could be where this dramatic event takes place.
Apart from the announced episode list and titles, the teaser clip also confirmed the timeline for the fifth and concluding season: Autumn of 1987. This is a slight leap into the future compared to some fan speculations, but it’s not as far as many had anticipated. Although the video didn’t provide a specific release date, we can expect it to be included in the 2025 television lineup at some stage.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m excited to share that you can dive into the thrilling world of Stranger Things right now! All you need is an active Netflix subscription, and you’ll have access to stream the first four seasons. Enjoy the adventure!
