The Strongest Superheroes in the MCU

The Strongest Superheroes in the MCU

As a devoted follower of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over a decade now, I must say that both Captain Marvel and Scarlet Witch are truly formidable figures. However, if we’re talking about raw power, it seems like the scales tip slightly towards Scarlet Witch.

Over the past fifteen years, the Marvel Universe on screen has significantly expanded. Initially, it consisted only of Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, and Nick Fury. However, as time passed, characters from Marvel comics began to populate the franchise. Established heroes like The Avengers, lesser-known characters debuted in the 70s such as Shang-Chi and the Eternals, and more recent additions such as Ms. Marvel and Ironheart now share this ever-expanding universe. There seems to be no end in sight, with new additions to the franchise emerging daily.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but wonder: if superhero battles ever erupted in real life, who would come out on top? Or which hero boasts the greatest strength? Here’s a list of the 20 mightiest heroes from our beloved franchise, based solely on their film portrayals. Their comic book personas are not factored into this ranking.

20 Ancient One

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Doctor Strange, the character known as the Ancient One was played by Tilda Swinton. She served as the mystical protector of Earth, leading the Masters of the Mystic Arts. She played a crucial part in guiding Stephen Strange into the realm of magic and supervising his transformation into a powerful sorcerer. The Ancient One’s presence, as one who had been safeguarding the world from threats beyond human understanding, significantly grounded Phase 3 of the MCU.

Although the Ancient One wasn’t particularly large or tough, her true strength lay in her immense wisdom and command of mystical powers. She was undeniably one of the strongest superheroes within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, employing potent spells, controlling time with the Eye of Agamotto, and even projecting her spirit elsewhere. In the MCU, she engaged in battles against Kaecilius and Dormammu, and her foresight abilities allowed her to aid the Avengers in reversing Thanos’ snap by glimpsing various possible futures.

19 Groot

The charming Flora colossus, voiced by Vin Diesel, has had an incredibly endearing journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). First appearing in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy as the walking, talking tree who teamed up with Rocket Raccoon as a bounty hunter, Groot’s limited vocabulary – consisting only of “I am Groot” – belies his immense strength. His wooden exterior and selfless nature make him a force to be reckoned with. He transformed from a towering tree to a tiny sapling and back again into a powerful warrior.

In comparison to other superheroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Groot stands out uniquely due to his extraordinary abilities. He can regenerate and increase in size, which gives him adaptability during battles. Moreover, he is incredibly strong physically, making him formidable in combat. His selfless acts and bravery have been evident in fights against adversaries such as Ronan the Accuser and Thanos’ forces. The climactic transformation of Groot into Swoll Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has left a lasting impression, solidifying his role as a guardian of the galaxy.

18 Star-Lord

Reminiscent of “Guardians of the Galaxy,” another superhero deserving mention is Peter Quill, more famously known as Star-Lord. Played by Chris Pratt, his story began when he was taken from Earth as a child. As an adult, he found himself among the Ravagers and rose to become a notorious outlaw. The discovery of the Orb in the 2014 film marked the start of his thrilling journey within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), eventually making him a pivotal character in the cosmic storyline of the MCU.

Regarding Star-Lord’s physical prowess, it’s a mix of his Celestial ancestry and human intelligence that sets him apart. Unlike conventional superheroes who soar through the skies or boast unlimited might, Star-Lord showcases unique fighting techniques, a tactical brain, and a knack for advanced technology and controlling cosmic energy. Peter Quill, also known as Star-Lord, has engaged in battles against formidable enemies such as Ronan and Thanos, endured assaults from Gamora, and even managed to channel the power of the Power Stone, making him both powerful and captivating.

17 Black Widow

The Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCU

As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but marvel at the enigmatic character of Natasha Romanoff, alias Black Widow, who made her debut in “Iron Man 2.” With a murky past as an assassin for the KGB, she skillfully navigated the line between good and evil. Leaving her shady history behind, she chose to join forces with S.H.I.E.L.D., becoming one of their most trusted agents. Her intellect and agility were invaluable in keeping our superhero team cohesive. Her performances in “The Avengers” and “Avengers: Endgame” were truly unforgettable.

Exceptionally skilled in hand-to-hand combat and espionage, Black Widow’s abilities exceed those of most superheroes physically. Her prowess as a martial artist, acrobat, and marksman is unmatched, having demonstrated this through countless battles against various adversaries such as aliens, robots, super soldiers, villains like Loki, Ultron, the Winter Soldier, and even formidable foes like Thanos. Black Widow serves as a testament that true strength encompasses not only physical prowess but also immense emotional resilience.

16 Winter Soldier

Initially, James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes, played by Sebastian Stan, was not known as the Winter Soldier. Instead, he debuted in Captain America: The First Avenger as Steve Rogers’ closest friend. During wartime, Bucky was believed to have perished, but he came back as a brainwashed assassin in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, introducing intricate layers to his character. After undergoing memory erasure and being labeled the world’s most wanted fugitive, there was a phase in the Marvel Cinematic Universe where the Winter Soldier functioned as an unyielding killing machine.

In his role as Winter Soldier, he boasts abilities and resilience amplified by the super-soldier serum, comparable to Captain America’s. He also has extraordinary speed, received a cybernetic arm from HYDRA, and was trained as an assassin, which honed his combat skills to an unprecedented level. Throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he engaged in battles against formidable adversaries such as Captain America, Iron Man, Black Panther, and even Thanos’ forces when they invaded Wakanda. During this encounter, he utilized a vibranium arm, a new addition to his arsenal.

15 Man-Thing

The Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCU

In the Disney+ special “Werewolf by Night”, the character Man-Thing made a brief appearance but his power is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Originally known as Theodore “Ted” Sallis, Man-Thing underwent a transformation and turned into a plant-like creature without consciousness. He’s been taken into custody by S.H.I.E.L.D., and he has also fought in the Grandmaster’s contests at Sakaar, suggesting that his combat experience is significant.

From my perspective, his powers are such that anyone who senses fear from him will be consumed by something akin to acid. This was evident with Joshua Jovan and Verussa Bloodstone. Given that all living beings experience fear, they would likely perish in this manner. However, individuals like Jack Russell and Elsa Bloodstone, who aren’t scared of him, remain unaffected. In essence, Man-Thing is a heartwarming character, but his immense power makes him an underestimated figure in the MCU. The Avengers might want to take note of this when facing Kang the Conqueror.

14 Spider-Man

As a movie enthusiast, I was thoroughly impressed by the introduction of Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, in “Captain America: Civil War.” Even though he’s still green around the gills, this young hero packs quite a punch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). His superhuman strength, spider-sense, and wall-crawling abilities, complemented by his sharp intellect, make Spider-Man one of the most formidable heroes we’ve seen so far.

It could be said that someone might think he wouldn’t be as resourceful if not for Stark and the magical abilities in his suits making him seem too powerful, but “Spider-Man: Homecoming” demonstrated that without Stark Technology, he is still Spider-Man. He has faced off against villains such as Vulture and Mysterio. In his solo films, Parker showcased a brilliant mind, inventing synthetic webbing; he can lift heavy loads, use his “Peter Tingle” to avoid bullets and overpower the Winter Soldier and his metal arm. Despite being smaller than his counterparts, Spider-Man consistently demonstrates himself to be an exceptional superhero.

13 Iron Man

Initiating the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in 2008 with “Iron Man,” a film that remains a significant milestone in the franchise’s history, Tony Stark, alias Iron Man, is a man who envisions possibilities and prepares for every eventuality. In essence, an ordinary individual, he’s no stranger to battling his inner demons and leverages his brilliant scientific mind to craft numerous armored exoskeletons. These suits boast abilities like flight, repulsor blasts, and exceptional resilience. Stark’s arsenal includes suits tailored for different situations, each equipped with an array of weapons to overpower any adversary. In essence, Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, is a man who envisions possibilities and prepares for every eventuality.

In a fresh take on the role, Robert Downey Jr. revitalized the character in a remarkable way. From battling a conflict sparked by his own inventions to sacrificing for the greater good against Thanos, he embodied the essence of responsibility among superheroes. The Iron Man suit served as an extension of Tony’s determination and abilities, surpassing ordinary human capabilities. With each film, he integrated advanced technology into the suit, continually improving it. While some might argue that he is nothing without his suit, Iron Man 3 demonstrated that even without it, he possesses an exceptional intellect that can be as formidable as any Iron Man suit.

12 Captain America

The Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCU

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Captain America stands tall as a symbol of moral integrity, serving as the soul of the franchise. He is not only one of the strongest characters but also possesses remarkable resilience. Interestingly, the physique that the supersoldier serum bestowed upon Steve Rogers in The First Avenger, when compared to Bruce Banner’s Hulk form, holds an equivalent mass. Lastly, Chris Evans portrayed the character with a timeless valor that provided a contrasting sense of courage amidst the complexities of contemporary times.

Infinity War. Over the years, he’s fought off Loki, an alien army, Ultron, and even Thanos. Even against seemingly invincible extraterrestrial beings, having Captain America by your side gives a sense of security.

11 Black Panther

The Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCU

In the movie “Captain America: Civil War,” T’Challa made his solo debut in the film “Black Panther.” As the sovereign of the clandestine African nation, Wakanda, he played dual roles as a ruler and guardian. Upon receiving the power of the Heart-Shaped Herb, T’Challa evolved into a King with extraordinary strength, agility, and speed. With Wakanda revealing itself to the world, Black Panther skillfully safeguarded the vibranium reserves from those seeking to misuse its potency.

The character T’Challa possesses powers that match Captain America’s might, largely due to the technological leaps made by his nation. Equipped with a suit crafted from indestructible vibranium, Black Panther is virtually unbeatable. In combat, he stood firm against The Winter Soldier and even managed to stand ground against an alien force. Simultaneously, Shuri engaged in battle with Namor, a highly potent character within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Both T’Challa and Shuri, who have held the title of Black Panther, demonstrate comparable strength and rank among the most powerful figures in the MCU.

10 Hulk

The Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCU

In the 2008 film titled the same as himself, Bruce Banner grappled for years to keep the gamma-radiated beast inside in check. Across multiple movies, he added layers of complexity to the tormented scientist who transforms under duress or anger into the Hulk. The angrier he becomes, the more powerful he becomes. The Hulk has demonstrated this power on numerous occasions: shattering buildings, hurling vehicles, tearing colossal monsters limb from limb, defeating Thor a couple of times, clashing with Hela, and enduring and reversing the Thanos Snap, making him as potent as the Mad Titan.

Some people argue that since Bruce Banner and the Hulk have merged into Smart Hulk, the Hulk has become somewhat weaker, more reserved, and more like an ordinary being. However, the combination of intelligence and strength gives him a new kind of power. Furthermore, although the balance of power in the Marvel Cinematic Universe may have changed recently, and he appears less frequently now, the Hulk remains one of the strongest characters.

9 She-Hulk

Jennifer Walters, more famously known as She-Hulk, is Bruce Banner’s cousin who made an appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) during Phase 4, specifically through the series titled “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.” Unlike her counterpart, she offers a more refined portrayal for several reasons. She can control her anger more effectively and maintain better composure, which is a significant difference from her cousin. Despite her green, oversized appearance, she manages to integrate into society, holding a position as a lawyer, and even navigates her romantic life.

Despite her impressive size, she’s actually smaller than Bruce Banner, yet shares his powerful abilities. Her strengths are immense physical power, a rapid healing factor, unending stamina and agility, and invulnerable skin that withstands damage. She’s an outstanding addition to the MCU due to her strength, wit, humor, and relatable human traits, adding depth to the Hulk clan. Moreover, She-Hulk embodies the idea that women can push limits in any way they choose, rather than shying away from femininity.

8 Sersi

The Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCU

Sersi, often overlooked, doesn’t receive the recognition she truly deserves. Making her debut in the comic series Eternals, she was selected by Arishem the Judge, a Celestial responsible for their creation, to head her team. For thousands of years, Sersi lived covertly among humans, employing her powers to subtly sway major world events without directly intervening. Despite her human appearance, Sersi has the ability to alter the molecular composition of objects and transport them through various phases.

Despite lacking Gilgamesh’s physical prowess or Ikaris’s flight capabilities, she possesses an extraordinary ability: manipulating cosmic energy to transform both organic and inorganic matter at will. This power, which enables her to alter atoms and change substances, is extraordinarily potent. It allowed her to penetrate a Deviant’s side and convert pavement into sand just as Kro was about to attack her. When united with her fellow Eternals, she can even overcome a Celestial, one of the most powerful entities in the universe.

7 Vision

The Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCU

As we move down the list, extraordinary powers beyond mere physicality start to manifest. In “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” Vision was born as an android with artificial intelligence. This character’s power stems directly from the Mind Stone, one of Thanos’ six Infinity Stones, which he later uses to wipe out half the universe. Despite being more philosophical than the other Avengers, Vision’s powers surpass anything the earlier heroes on the list could handle, as he wields the power of an Infinity Stone.

Vision can fly, phase through objects, make himself denser, predict unforeseen attacks, and has incredible strength and speed. He can also wield raw cosmic energy and fire concentrated energy blasts with unmatched precision. He is The Avengers’ big new secret weapon against a threat like Ultron, and the series What If…? showed just Vision’s body alone (but with Ultron’s mind) could have killed Thanos easily. Vision is so strong that only one Avenger has been shown with the ability to defeat him, and she is further down on this list.

6 Adam Warlock

The Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCU

In the grand scheme of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I, a humble movie critic, had the pleasure of witnessing the debut of Adam Warlock in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.” Conceived by his mother with a singular objective – the elimination of the Guardians of the Galaxy – Adam was initially sent after Rocket. However, Ayesha’s commands clouded his judgment, preventing him from thinking for himself. Beneath his juvenile demeanor and comedic flair, though, lies an assemblage of powers that could potentially reap devastation on a cosmic scale.

Through his mechanical creation and brutal deeds, Adam has claimed countless lives and demonstrated unfathomable power. Living in the cold emptiness of space suggests an immortal existence for him. In combat with the Guardians, he shattered Nebula’s form, beheaded Groot, and overpowered Drax. Combined with his superhuman strength, speed, cosmic awareness, and energy control abilities, Adam is a force not to trifle with. He endured stabbings and explosions, yet remained alive. Evidently, he can absorb as much punishment as he can dish out.

5 Namor

The Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCU

As a seasoned movie critic, I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing Marvel’s ancient characters take center stage, and none have been as captivating as Namor in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” Born ruler of the submerged kingdom Talokan, Namor made his long-awaited debut in the MCU, initially portrayed as a formidable adversary.

This formidable character, blending hero and villain traits, boasts powers that are virtually indomitable. With superhuman might, swiftness, and dexterity, extraordinary aquatic regeneration, telepathic capabilities, and the unique ability to “swim through the air” as he described, he soars with ankle wings. His command over both watery depths and aerial realms cements his status as one of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most powerful personalities. In his battle against Black Panther, he demonstrated equal strength, managing to impale him with his spear through the abdomen. The film also highlights that he is on par with The Hulk in terms of raw power.

4 Thor

The Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCU

The character Thor Odinson, also known as the God of Thunder, made his first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the 2011 film “Thor”. Chris Hemsworth portrayed him, infusing the heroic figure with a blend of charm and wit. After being exiled to Earth, Thor developed humility through helping humans. His weapon, Mjolnir, bestowed upon him abilities such as flight, control over weather, powerful attacks, and astonishing speed. Currently, there aren’t many who can match Thor in a battle, particularly following the upgrade of his Stormbreaker during Infinity War.>

Thor boasts an impressive warfare background spanning over 1,500 years, and though he may struggle with his trickster brother Loki, it appears few characters like Scarlet Witch or Vision could outmatch him. His battles against Hulk without a new weapon and single-handedly altering the course of numerous conflicts using his thunder abilities are testament to this. Even in the initial Avengers movie, Captain America and Iron Man found it challenging to subdue him, and that was prior to the development that has culminated in his current strength.

3 Doctor Strange

The Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCU

In the 2016 film titled the same as itself, Benedict Cumberbatch breathed life into the character of Doctor Strange, blending charm and arrogance perfectly. Given that he is the keeper of the Time Stone, outsmarting formidable villains from various dimensions and protecting reality, it’s no surprise that he holds such a position. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Doctor Strange stands as a powerful magic-wielder. With his Cloak of Levitation, a multitude of mystical relics, and a spellbook at his disposal, his abilities make him a force to be reckoned with.

As a passionate moviegoer, I’d put it this way: With a flick of his wrist, Doctor Strange can summon cosmic beings, journey to any location imaginable, warp space and time at will, and redesign reality on the battlefield. Unlike many others who rely on sheer physical strength, Doctor Strange carries an arsenal of mystical tools capable of overpowering even the most formidable foes. Even without the Time Stone, he’s proven he can stand his ground against alternate versions of himself, ancient cosmic horrors from across the multiverse, and the Scarlet Witch using just his intelligence and ingenuity.

2 Captain Marvel

The Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCU

As a die-hard movie fan, let me tell you that Captain Marvel truly cranks up the excitement in the MCU with her mind-blowing abilities, placing her among the most powerful characters ever conceived. Soaring through the skies, displaying indomitable endurance, possessing limitless strength and durability, boasting superhuman agility and speed, maintaining an endless reservoir of stamina – this gal’s got it all!

Carol Danvers’ abilities appear to place her as the MCU equivalent of Superman. She’s the heavy hitter, the reinforcement who swoops in when all seems lost, ready to turn the tide and save the day. Her might is such that she single-handedly obliterated Thanos’ command ship effortlessly, even making him resort to an Infinity Stone to prompt a response, after she had easily overpowered Thor and Hulk without needing one. It’s clear that Captain Marvel stands as the most powerful character in the MCU, second only to one individual.

1 Scarlet Witch

The Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCUThe Strongest Superheroes in the MCU

The character known as Scarlet Witch stands out among the Avengers for her immense power. Her abilities were first hinted at in the movie “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” where she portrayed the intricate and somewhat vulnerable character, Wanda Maximoff. However, as the Marvel Cinematic Universe has developed, so too has Scarlet Witch’s power. The series “WandaVision” demonstrated her ability to alter reality at will, while in the movie “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” viewers witnessed the devastating power she wields when she disregards life’s sanctity.

In a remarkable display of strength, Scarlet Witch outmaneuvered formidable figures such as Mr. Fantastic, Professor X, Black Bolt, and an alternate version of Captain Marvel, demonstrating her superior might. However, it’s not just her raw power that makes Scarlet Witch nearly invincible; her mastery over chaos magic sets her apart. Her power even eclipses that of the Sorcerer Supreme. Few characters possess the ability to single-handedly annihilate the universe, and Scarlet Witch is one of them. It’s anticipated that she may return to the Marvel Cinatic Universe in the near future.
