The Stunt That Made Tom Cruise Say "Maybe This Wasn't Such a Good Idea"

As a gamer with a penchant for thrilling experiences, I must admit that Tom Cruise‘s stunt at the 2024 Paris Olympics Closing Ceremony left me utterly awestruck! It was like watching an epic cutscene straight out of a high-octane action game. From the daring repel off the Stade de France to the motorcycle chase, and finally, the breathtaking plane jump – it was a spectacle that will forever be etched in my gaming memory.

Tom Cruise made quite an entrance at the 2024 Paris Olympics Closing Ceremony.

The well-known actor, famed for his daring stunts near death, made an unforgettable impression as he descended from the peak of Stade de France to snatch the flag from both Simone Biles, an Olympic gold medalist, and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. Following this, Cruise mounted a motorcycle and raced through the streets of Paris before reaching a runway, swiftly boarding a massive plane destined for L.A., the city hosting the 2028 Summer Olympics.

After reaching U.S. soil, Cruise exited the plane by parachute and landed in the hills above Los Angeles. He subsequently altered the famous Hollywood sign to display the Olympic rings – marking the formal transition of the Summer Games from the City of Lights to the City of Angels.

Tom Cruise told Jimmy Fallon about filming the (real) Rogue Nation airplane stunt

It’s common knowledge that Tom Cruise, who stars in the Mission: Impossible films, delights viewers by performing breathtaking stunts.

During his appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in July 2015, the actor portraying spy Ethan Hunt from the ongoing series was asked about a daring stunt from the Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation installment, where he actually hung off the side of an airplane. This is the same Jimmy Fallon who, coincidentally, co-hosted the 2024 Paris Olympics Closing Ceremony.

If you’re unfamiliar with the scenario, there’s a massive cargo aircraft, one that would make me shudder just thinking about boarding. Yet here I am, dangling from its side, and it’s preparing for takeoff. Fallon explained this thrilling stunt to the audience.

According to Cruise, he was positioned beside the aircraft before takeoff, engines roared, we moved along the tarmac, and eventually sped down the runway. He shared that he informed the pilot about the specific angle of attack required to ensure his feet would strike the plane’s body during ascent.

“He kept smiling at me throughout our conversation, and he assured me there wouldn’t be any issues,” Cruise told Fallon. “During the first take, it was a struggle to keep my feet on the steps because we were moving so quickly down the runway, almost touching the plane body,” Cruise explained.

In simpler terms, he said, “It got pretty intense.” At that point, he admitted to himself, “Perhaps I shouldn’t have done this. But it’s already happened, and I can’t back out now. I can’t reveal everything to everyone, I’ve got the entire crew on board with me.”

Fallon suggested to Cruise during their conversation, “It’s not necessary for you to perform that action. Instead, consider using a stand-in, something like a mannequin, which would allow for a wide shot.”

“It brings me great joy being the host of a late-night TV talk show. I can’t help but feel elated. My desk and my job mean the world to me,” Fallon playfully stated, giving a peck to both his desk and microphone.

In my gaming spirit, I simply aimed to keep you all amused during the Closing Ceremony, and boy, did I manage!
