‘The Substance’ Scores 5 Oscar Nominations, Including Best Picture

Coralie Fargeat’s chilling body-horror film titled “The Substance” has garnered five Academy Award nominations, among which is the prestigious category of Best Picture.

The movie primarily uses practical effects and focuses on the character of Elisabeth Sparkle, who is played by Moore and is past her prime as a celebrity. She decides to use an illegal drug that gives her a temporary youthful alter ego named Sue (portrayed by Margaret Qualley). Subsequently, she has to deal with the consequences.

Dennis Quaid also stars in the film, which premiered in May at the Cannes Film Festival.

In their review, Lovia Gyarkye from The Hollywood Reporter expresses that the character is deeply and urgently tormented, a trait which intensifies the uneasy tones of Fargeat’s film. She portrays a woman who continues to be trapped by the destructive craving for eternal youth, despite its devastating impact on her mental state.

In her review for The Hollywood Reporter, Lovia Gyarkye noted that the actress infuses her character with a raw, urgent desperation, which significantly heightens the disquieting undertones present in Fargeat’s movie. She portrays a woman who continues to be ensnared by the compulsion of maintaining youth, despite its destructive impact on her mental state.

Earlier this month, Moore bagged a Golden Globe for Best Actress, and during her heartfelt address, she expressed how significant the accolade was to her at this particular phase of her career. She revealed that she had hit a low point in life before the arrival of the film titled “The Substance“.
