As a movie critic who spent my formative years enthralled by the soaring adventures of Christopher Reeve’s Superman, Frank Grillo‘s heartfelt reaction to the upcoming James Gunn reboot of the iconic DC hero resonates deeply with me. His personal connection to the late, great Superman actor and his nostalgia for the original films make him an ideal ambassador for this highly anticipated movie.
Frank Grillo openly shared his emotions upon viewing an early sneak peek of James Gunn’s upcoming Superman trailer. In a chat with MovieWeb about his forthcoming horror movie, Werewolves, Grillo confessed that he felt a shiver when he caught sight of the yet-unreleased teaser for the highly anticipated DCU revamp before it was made public. When queried about what aspects of the trailer evoked such positive feelings, the actor pointed out:
“Let me share something with you. You may recall that I had a small acquaintance with Christopher Reeve. We were students of the same acting coach in New York City, long ago. As a child, I was captivated by his Superman movies. And in this new adaptation by Gunn, he’s successfully incorporated those classic elements into the contemporary portrayal of Superman.
Pay attention: The trailer for the upcoming Superman film is set to be released in movie theaters around mid- to late December, possibly before Mufasa: The Lion King. Grillo spoke highly of the film’s lead actor, David Corenswet, who assumes the role of Superman/Clark Kent. You might recognize Corenswet from his appearances in Lady in the Lake, Twisters, and Ryan Murphy’s Hollywood. Grillo enthused, “This young actor David is outstanding. I mean he’s fantastic. Now, Henry Cavill was good [as Superman in the DCEU], but this guy is exceptional.” He further commented:
Watching the trailer, it had me on the verge of tears. It stirred up emotions within me, reminiscent of the Christopher Reeve Superman. It seems James Gunn has successfully reintroduced this movie into that world. I believe fans are going to be quite enthusiastic about this.
Over the past few months, Grillo’s name has been quite prominent, primarily due to the fact that his DC character, Rick Flag Sr., is slated for multiple appearances in various DC Universe productions. Firstly, we have the animated series titled “Creature Commandos,” scheduled for release on Max in December. Furthermore, Rick Flag Sr. will also appear in the second season of Gunn’s “Peacemaker” series, starring John Cena. Lastly, there’s the upcoming movie “Superman,” set to hit theaters in the summer of 2025. Rumors suggest that Rick Flag Sr. might collaborate with other powerful characters to defeat Superman in this film, alongside an ensemble cast including David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luther.
Frank Grillo’s Next Project, Werewolves, Is Bloody Frightening
Indeed, Superman is currently keeping fans engaged as they scour through social media updates. Meanwhile, Frank Grillo’s latest venture, Werewolve, directed by genre filmmaker Steven C. Miller (known for First Kill, Escape Plan 2, and Margaux), promises to capture attention – and possibly a few heads in the process. This film follows two scientists in a race against time to prevent a mutation that transforms people into werewolves after being exposed to a supermoon the year before.
The biggest news about the production is that Miller chose practical effects over CGI, which co-star Lou Diamond Phillips said are “unbelievable.” This gives the film an extra kick if not a refreshingly welcome ’80s horror vibe. Grillo recently pitched the film to us as “The Purge meets werewolves.” His character, Wesley Marshall, is hell-bent on keeping everybody safe during the supermoon fiasco. But that proves to be far too challenging. Those werewolves are fierce. That said, expect plenty of gore, blood, true horror, and jump scares. And maybe a sequel? Stay tuned. Werewolves, from Briarcliff Entertainment, hits theaters December 6. Watch the trailer below.
