As a gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the TV landscape has evolved significantly since the days of pixelated graphics and 8-bit soundtracks. One such evolution is the emergence of thought-provoking miniseries like STARZ’s “Three Women,” a testament to the power of storytelling and human connection.
An intriguing mini-series titled “Three Women,” set to air on STARZ in 2024, has an interesting backstory – it was almost never produced despite its eventual success. Inspired by Lisa Taddeo’s best-selling novel of the same name, it delves into the intriguing sexual experiences of three women from diverse regions across the United States. This week’s episode, “Sloane,” explores the complexities of an open marriage involving DeWanda Wise and Blair Underwood‘s characters. The actors recently shared with TopMob how they developed a level of comfort for the show’s intimate scenes.
During our virtual meeting for “Three Women”‘s press day, the mutual admiration between Wise and Underwood was evidently sky-high. Wise showered her co-actress with compliments, expressing her delight in portraying Underwood’s screen partner on the upcoming series.
I live next door to Darnell Martin, who has collaborated with Blair. Therefore, his impressive reputation precedes him beyond just being an exceptional actor. I witnessed this when I saw him in A Streetcar Named Desire on Broadway. Apart from his extraordinary acting skills, he’s a remarkable individual. The encounter left me quite emotional. In fact, knowing that he is as admirable a person as they come, only added to my anticipation. To make the experience even more special, I prepared a playlist with songs by Sade and Chaka Khan.
In the show “Three Women,” the skilled duo of actors portray an established couple who frequently entertain guests of both genders for intimate activities. Indeed, Claire Warden, one of Hollywood’s intimacy coordinators, was enlisted to ensure comfort and professionalism. It’s crucial in a role like this to be at ease with your dancing partner, metaphorically speaking. As the actress from “Harder They Fall” told me, her prior connection with Blair Underwood (through mutual acquaintances) gave her confidence that he would uphold his end of the partnership.
An integral aspect of the entire scenario? The ideal collection of songs. Just as DeWanda Wise mentioned, maintaining a high level of energy on set was crucial for her, and she did this by playing powerful women like Sade and Chaka Khan loudly. Furthermore, it appears that the veteran actor from L.A. Law enjoyed working with Wise greatly, as indicated by his subsequent comments.
Typically, my room was adjacent to hers, allowing me to listen to her through the walls. Thanks for your words, DeWanda – they’re heartwarming. To be honest, I was eager to collaborate with you. Your talent has already made a significant impression on me, and before this project, you were part of Jurassic Park! The quality of work you produce is remarkable, and it’s a privilege to work alongside dedicated and gifted individuals like yourself. Indeed, DeWanda embodies these qualities perfectly.
It’s not surprising at all that these two make such a compelling duo on screen! Their chemistry is undeniable, and it’s evident they had a great time working together for Three Women. It goes without saying that Blair Underwood and DeWanda Wise are both talented actors with impressive portfolios. I’m delighted to see them utilizing their skills for a series that offers thought-provoking insights into female sexual desire, exploring how it has been suppressed, manipulated, and liberated throughout history.
If you’re tuning into “Three Women,” don’t forget to explore Shailene Woodley’s insights about how her character resonates with her own past experiences of nomadic living and Betty Gilpin’s thoughts on the book’s impact, as she shared them with us. Be sure to catch up on fresh episodes, airing every Friday at 10 p.m. ET.
