The Sweet Story Behind Bill Murray Showing Up At Saturday Night’s Premiere: ‘We Didn’t Plan Any Of That’

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the upcoming movie “Saturday Night” is shaping up to be a must-watch for any fan of comedy and nostalgia alike. The fact that Bill Murray made a surprise appearance at the premiere adds an extra layer of excitement and authenticity to the film.

With October’s release date of “Saturday Night” drawing near, its creator Jason Reitman unveiled the film for the first time at the 51st Telluride Film Festival last month. This marked the movie’s world premiere, making it a particularly delightful moment for one of the upcoming films slated for 2024. Interestingly, Bill Murray joined him on stage to introduce the movie, and there’s an intriguing tale behind how that came about.

Jason Reitman fondly reminisced about his stint as a writer for Saturday Night Live before delving into the creation of a film that encapsulates the initial anarchy of the sketch show’s debut. Following this, he welcomed Bill Murray who graciously deemed his three seasons on the show as his most valuable work experience. Murray also showered praise on Reitman and his father Ivan Reitman, with whom he collaborated on movies like Ghostbusters, Stripes, and Meatballs.

The Sweet Way The Saturday Night Premiere Moment Came About

It turns out that Bill Murray was attending the festival for his film “The Friend” when Jason Reitman managed to secure him for a special moment. Here’s how it went down according to Reitman:

On this occasion, it marked the fifth film screening for me at Telluride, and the response has been mixed – from being warmly received to less enthusiastic receptions. As I walked into that particular screening, rehearsing my speech in anticipation, a gentle tap on my shoulder caught my attention. It was Bill Murray. We hadn’t coordinated anything beforehand. He asked, “Hey buddy, shall I join you up there?” I agreed, unsure of the protocol. He then proposed an intriguing idea: “Why don’t you introduce me? That way, I can praise you.” I had no clue about his plans, but he turned out to be quite gracious in his compliments.

During a conversation with Deadline, Reitman revealed that the encounter in question was purely coincidental since the two ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ partners happened to be at the festival simultaneously. Furthermore, he added this detail as well.

What I gathered from Bill’s words was that his current role is the job he cherishes most among all he’s ever had. Unlike others, Bill doesn’t often express himself in such a demonstrative manner, as you’re well aware. However, when it comes to sincerity, his understated style speaks volumes. In this case, his sentiment was clear: he truly values the job.

In the movie, even though my buddy Bill Murray wasn’t part of the cast until Season 2, his role is taken up by Dylan O’Brien. Notably, Lorne Michaels, Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner, John Belushi, and others who were part of the original cast are also portrayed in this film. As Reitman went on…

But what stuck with me the most was him talking about his time at SNL and how important it was to him. It echoed everything that I had heard from all the others about the importance, not only globally as Saturday Night Live changed culture, but for them individually being at the center of what you just described. The moment where an atom is split. For me, culturally, that’s what SNL is. It defines my sense of humor. It defines the way I look at the world. The screening went great, the audience really went for it in a way that I hadn’t experienced before. When Lamorne Morris goes up to sing, ‘gonna get me a shotgun’…the audience is actually cheering. I stepped out of the theater and the first thing I thought about was my dad.

In addition to the publication, Ivan Reitman also disclosed that the premiere was a poignant occasion for him. The reason being, it marked the final script his father read and the first movie he wouldn’t get to watch, since his son, Jason Reitman, had revived Ghostbusters in 2021 with ‘Afterlife’. Despite the mixed feelings of joy and sorrow that night, it was truly special to be introduced by Bill Murray. Ivan Reitman passed away at the age of 75 in 2022, mere months after witnessing his son’s Ghostbusters return on screen.

Excitedly speaking as a devoted fan, I eagerly anticipate reexperiencing the magical premiere night of SNL, as Saturday Night graces our cinemas on October 11th.
