As a devoted fan of the magical world created by J.K. Rowling, I can’t help but be touched by the heartwarming stories that continue to surface about the late Dame Maggie Smith and her time on the Harry Potter set. The moment when Daniel Radcliffe, as an eight-year-old boy, approached the legendary actress and asked if he could call her “Dame” is a testament to the awe and reverence she inspired in those around her.
People everywhere are still captivated by the magical moments shared between Daniel Radcliffe and Dame Maggie Smith in the “Harry Potter” films. The extraordinary bond between the young wizard and his wise, lovable professor was palpable during their enchanting scenes at Hogwarts. After the sad news of Dame Maggie’s passing at 89 years old, Radcliffe shares a heartwarming anecdote about their first encounter on the “Harry Potter” set. Hearing this tale only makes me appreciate their connection even more.
The first time Daniel Radcliffe and Dame Maggie Smith met was on the set of the BBC miniseries David Copperfield when he was a young kid. You can imagine what a wonder it must have been to reunite with the famed actress in the Harry Potter movies as Harry and Professor McGonagall which would be the start of a 10-year partnership. Radcliffe spoke on The Radio Times about reuniting with Dame Smith for the first time on the magical set and the story is just so incredibly sweet:
I approached Dame Maggie Smith on the set of David Copperfield since I’d heard she was a Dame and had a vague understanding of the title. On my first encounter, I jokingly asked if I could call her ‘Dame.’ Perhaps that humorously ingratiated me to her at such a young age (around eight), as it seemed to amuse her.
As a youngster, I might pose the same question to Dame Maggie Smith, an illustrious actress, that Daniel Radcliffe once did. At the time of working together on the Harry Potter films, he was too young to be aware of her most notable movies or the cinematic histories of any adult co-stars. It’s understandable since not every child actor is expected to know the filmography of everyone they work alongside. They were fortunate enough to collaborate with such esteemed performers from the start.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but feel the void left by Dame Maggie Smith among her beloved Harry Potter cohorts. Daniel Radcliffe’s heartfelt tribute, shared in Variety, beautifully recounts their first encounter on David Copperfield and the sense of luck he felt at working alongside her for a decade on this magical franchise. Interestingly, it was Dame Smith who played a significant role in helping Radcliffe secure his life-altering part as Harry Potter thanks to their prior work together. I’m certain that he will forever cherish Dame Smith’s impact on his career.
As a devoted fan, I couldn’t help but be moved by heartwarming tributes from my fellow Harry Potter cast members to the remarkable Downton Abbey actress, who they admire deeply. Emma Watson was one of those paying homage, calling her “the epitome of greatness.” Rupert Grint expressed his gratitude for sharing a dance with her in The Goblet of Fire. Tom Felton also joined in, thanking this Tony winner for watching over us rookies since the very first day and for sparing me from getting kicked off the set due to my constant laughter during Transfiguration classes with her.

Daniel Radcliffe likely felt starstruck working alongside Dame Maggie Smith once more on Harry Potter, unsure of how to address her. This was a charming beginning to a ten-year collaboration between the two, as they portrayed Harry Potter and Professor McGonagall respectively. Relive their time at Hogwarts by watching the Harry Potter film series, which is accessible with your Max subscription and Peacock account.
