As a die-hard fan of all things entertainment, I must admit that watching Jennifer Hudson’s performance at this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was nothing short of a spectacle. With her powerful voice and the mesmerizing dance moves of her dancers, it was truly a sight to behold – especially when you factor in the rain-resistant umbrella sherpa!
Many Americans consider Thanksgiving Day incomplete until they’ve watched the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on TV. This parade, which has been around for almost a century, happens regardless of whether it rains or shines. Despite the rain being predicted this year, the show remained captivating. In fact, those who saw Jennifer Hudson perform found the event even more enjoyable.
2021’s parade, either on NBC or through Peacock subscription, showcased all the signature elements of the event. Apart from popular floats and balloons, such as Spider-Man making his comeback, various musical acts took place in Harold Square, some before the main parade began and others during it. This year’s performances were held under rainy conditions, with most artists braving the weather. However, Jennifer Hudson opted out of getting wet and her dancers creatively used an umbrella as part of their act. Social media is abuzz with delight over this unique performance.
Hudson’s act was enjoyable by itself, yet it seemed many people missed appreciating it due to their fascination with the umbrella shielding her from rain. Essentially, the umbrella appeared to be dancing, moving between various performers, ensuring Hudson remained dry no matter who stood nearest at any given time.
Indeed, I’m brimming with questions. It seems like there must have been preparations for this performance, given the choreography involving an umbrella. Was that part of the routine planned from the start, or was it a spontaneous addition due to the predicted rain during the parade? Perhaps they rehearsed the umbrella segment in advance. Alternatively, could it be that the dancers are so proficient that they can seamlessly integrate unplanned elements like an umbrella and make it appear as part of the planned routine?
Participating in Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade during the rain isn’t likely to be a blast for anyone involved. From musicians playing music on the street to balloon handlers donning raincoats, everyone seems to just endure it. Regrettably, not everyone has access to their own personal umbrella guide to keep them dry, but then again, not everyone has achieved an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards).
Indeed, not everyone tried to stay dry during the rain. Some people even seemed to enjoy it. A popular tweet about the parade and the rain is gaining traction because a float advertising Season 2 of Wednesday seems thrilled that it was a cloudy and damp morning in New York. It doesn’t look like anyone here carried an umbrella.
Although most performances during the Macy’s Parade are lip-synced due to the technical challenges of singing live, Hudson seemed to be singing for real. It’s worth noting that the umbrella might have been used to protect the microphone from rain rather than Hudson herself.
It’s likely that everyone participating in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade this year managed to stay mostly dry. After all, it appears that Jennifer Hudson did.
