The Toxic Avenger's Peter Dinklage Shares Update on Movie's Release

As a seasoned cinephile with decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say the ongoing saga of “The Toxic Avenger” remake has left me feeling like a lab rat waiting for its weekly dose of toxic waste – and I’m not referring to the film itself. The anticipation is palpable, with the impressive cast led by Peter Dinklage, Elijah Wood, Kevin Bacon, and many more talented actors. It’s disheartening to see such a promising project languishing in development hell while movies like “Batgirl” and “Coyote vs. Acme” seemingly sail through production with ease.

Regarding the release of The Toxic Avenger, it appears that star Peter Dinklage is just as uncertain as everyone else about when viewers will be able to watch the long-awaited remake. This highly anticipated film, which garnered much praise during its premiere at Fantastic Fest nearly a year ago, has yet to announce a definitive release date.

The new take on the schlock-horror movie that made Troma a household name in gross, low budget movies has been gestating for so long now that many fans have started to worry the movie could end up finding its way into the same tax write-off pile of the likes of Batgirl and Coyote vs. Acme. The most shocking thing is that the movie holds a 92% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes, has featured in numerous film magazines in the last several months, and even released a trailer. However, it seems that even star Dinklage is not privy to whether a release date is imminent or not.

The renowned Game of Thrones actor, most recognized for his portrayal of Tyrion Lannister, is presently marketing his upcoming western suspense film, The Thicket. In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, the topic of The Toxic Avenger’s puzzling release postponement was brought up, and unfortunately, the actor’s response didn’t offer much optimism.

“I’m not involved as a producer, but I don’t know much about it. However, given that it was highly successful at Fantastic Fest in Austin, I really hope it gets wider recognition. The writer/director, Macon Blair, is fantastic – he’s one of my favorites and an artist I admire deeply. So let’s hope it basks in the limelight.”

2020 saw the initial announcement of The Toxic Avenger, with production commencing the year after. Joining Peter Dinklage in this stellar cast are Elijah Wood, Kevin Bacon, Jacob Tremblay, and Taylour Paige, among others. Initially slated for a 2023 release, the film has been completed. Yet, as we move forward, there’s been a noticeable absence of updates regarding a potential release date. As an ardent fan, I eagerly await more news on when I can finally witness this exciting production.

Regarding the film released in 2021, Dinklage expressed his views on the upcoming adaptation of Troma’s iconic character, emphasizing that it wasn’t simply a remake of the initial movie. In an interview with Empire Magazine, he stated:

“I found it incredibly enjoyable! The urge to try something completely new led me to take on a role as a monster in an outrageous, unconventional film. This isn’t a remake; instead, it represents the spirit of guerrilla filmmaking – creating without limitations or restrictions. These films are made regardless of obstacles and simply because those involved love what they do. Some might not be top-notch, but others can be incredibly entertaining. When movies become too polished, they can lose their connection to the audience. Viewers want to feel the grit, the raw emotion. I believe that the Troma films successfully immerse viewers in a world of chaos and uncertainty – almost as if dousing them in toxic waste.”

As we eagerly anticipate the return of the infamous “Toxic Avenger,” fans like myself can delightfully reminisce by re-watching the original 1984 film, conveniently available for streaming on various platforms such as Shudder, Tubi, and Apple TV+.
