The Umbrella Academy Season 4 Has Its Best Guest Stars in Its Worst Season

Summary

  • Mary J. Blige & Cameron Britton excel as Cha Cha & Hazel, Blige from music to acting.
  • Kate Walsh impresses in a different role as The Handler in a controlling yet odd character portrayal.
  • Megan Mullally & Nick Offerman shine as the malevolent couple Jean & Gene, despite Season 4 flaws.

As a long-time fan of quirky TV shows and a connoisseur of exceptional acting performances, I must say that The Umbrella Academy Season 4 has left me feeling quite disheartened. Despite the brilliant portrayals by Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman as Jean and Gene Thibodeau, the season as a whole falls short of expectations, much like a badly mixed cocktail on a hot day.

The Show “Umbrella Academy” revolves around a troubled and extraordinary family. This unique family is responsible for causing multiple apocalypses, one per season. The series also boasts a number of high-profile guest stars. Specifically, we’ll be discussing these guest characters. In the initial season, Mary J. Blige and Cameron Britton portrayed assassins Cha Cha and Hazel. Starting from Episode 5 of Season 1, but particularly in Season 2, Kate Walsh appeared as The Handler, who managed individuals such as Cha Cha and Hazel. Lastly, David Cross joined the cast in Season 4 as Sy Grossman, a dry cleaner who recruited the Umbrella Academy to locate his daughter, Jennifer.

However, among the most memorable guest appearances on the series, Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman stand out as Drs. Jean and Gene Thibodeau, a humorous yet somewhat alarming duo who will go to great lengths to achieve their objectives. Unfortunately, they appear in the fourth season, which is considered the weakest of the show. In this article, we delve into the guest stars of The Umbrella Academy , and explain why Mullally and Offerman shine despite being part of a less favorable season.

Guest Stars in Seasons 1 Through 3

Cha Cha and Hazel

Cha Cha and Hazel work together as time-preserving enforcers, employed by an organization known as The Commission. This group is tasked with maintaining the integrity of the timeline, and they do this by eliminating individuals who have the power to alter time. Their current objective is Number Five (Aidan Gallagher), a former assassin for The Commission who breached his contract and fled. Cha Cha and Hazel have been assigned to neutralize this dangerous individual.

Mary J. Blige and Cameron Britton deliver outstanding performances as Cha Cha and Hazel, with Britton truly shining as the reformed assassin who finds redemption through love. Although he may not be as well-known, Britton has demonstrated exceptional talent in roles like his chilling yet empathetic portrayal of Edmund Kemper in “Mindhunter.” While Mary J. Blige is recognized for her music career spanning decades, she’s recently branched out into acting. Her first significant acting role after being nominated for an Academy Award in “Mudbound” was on “The Umbrella Academy,” and she’s continued to act since then.

The Handler

In the show, The Handler is a senior official at the Commission who assigns tasks to characters such as Cha Cha, Hazel, and Five. In the second season, she gives Five the mission to eliminate the Board and seizes control of the Commission’s leadership. However, she ultimately faces consequences when she attempts to eliminate the Umbrella Academy. Despite this, she causes significant destruction in both seasons.

As a movie critic, I must admit that Kate Walsh has left an indelible mark on my cinematic memory with her portrayal of Dr. Addison Montgomery in “Grey’s Anatomy” and its spin-off “Private Practice.” Her talent is undeniable, and her ability to excel in such diverse roles only serves to heighten the intrigue surrounding her performance as the enigmatic Handler in “The Umbrella Academy.”

Guest Stars in Season 4

Sy Grossman

In the fourth season, the Umbrella Academy has been residing in their present timeline for six years without their powers. However, things take a turn when Sy Grossman abducts Viktor, one of the Umbrella Academy members, with the intention of using him as leverage to reunite the group. His goal is to find his lost daughter, and he has a box containing items belonging to her, including a bottle labeled Marigold. Upon finding Jennifer, it is revealed that she is not Sy’s daughter, but Sy continues to appear at crucial moments throughout the season to push Jennifer and Ben together.

David Cross is primarily recognized for portraying Tobias Fünke, the timid (and quite eccentric) spouse of Lindsay Bluth on Arrested Development. Since then, he hasn’t held many recurring roles in other series. Instead, he frequently accepts guest appearances, and excels in each one. Sy is no exception. Cross delivers a marvelous performance as a character who isn’t exactly truthful about his identity, yet somehow gets others to obey him even when they harbor doubts about him.

Drs. Jean and Gene Thibodeau

Among the illustrious guest stars on The Umbrella Academy, none have left quite the impact that Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman did, portraying Jean and Gene Thibodeau. This is not just because of their exceptional acting skills, but also due to a unique connection they share with their characters – they are real-life married couple, which makes their on-screen dynamic as finishing partners even more captivating. It’s a bond that Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman can relate to, given their own marital journey, adding an authenticity to their performance that truly sets them apart.

It’s comforting to assume that Jean and Gene aren’t like their on-screen personas, given that they portray characters who are cheerful yet malevolent. In the six episodes they appear, they ruthlessly eliminate the man who supplies them with artifacts from different eras, kidnap Jennifer from The Umbrella Academy, and subject her to traumatic experiences involving a colossal squid – a fear reminiscent of her childhood. To top it off, they secure the only dance number in Season 4.

Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman are exceptional on their own, but they truly excel as a pair. While Mullally is renowned for her character Karen Walker on “Will & Grace” and Offerman is recognized for his role as Ron Swanson on “Parks and Recreation,” they’ve both taken on numerous other roles and have even received Emmy Awards. However, their performances in their respective shows might not seem as significant due to the seasons they were in. For instance, when Jean and Gene rally all their followers in the last episode to protect the store where Ben and Jennifer are hiding with weapons, it feels insignificant because ultimately, Ben and Jennifer’s actions – the Cleanse – would have occurred regardless of those people being there. In essence, their efforts were symbolic rather than impactful in the grand scheme of things.

Although Mullally and Offerman deliver exceptional performances, the fourth and concluding season falls short, significantly impacting overall enjoyment. Regrettably, this season is disorganized and riddled with inconsistencies, making it hard to believe. Furthermore, fans are dissatisfied that Jean and Gene receive the only dance in Season 4. Clearly, this isn’t Mullally and Offerman’s fault, but the fact that they star in this disappointing season is unfortunate. Given all the issues plaguing the fourth season, it becomes challenging to savor their portrayals of Jean and Gene.
