In the captivating world of television and film, where careers ebb and flow like the tide, it is always fascinating to see the trajectories of our favorite actors post their most iconic roles. The case is no different for the talented ensemble of “Under the Dome,” a series that left an indelible mark on many viewers.
Based on Stephen King’s 2009 novel “Under the Dome”, we find a peculiar and terrifying setting where an entire town mysteriously finds itself trapped under a hidden, impenetrable barrier so strong it divides a cow in two upon its arrival. Isolated from any external contact, the people of Chester’s Mill grapple with this new existence while desperately trying to uncover who constructed the dome and for what purpose.
At its debut, “Under the Dome,” one of Stephen King’s highly-acclaimed TV shows, offered a captivating science fiction perspective on a world populated by the vibrant characters we’ve grown accustomed to from the renowned horror author. Characters like Dean Norris’s councilman Big Jim Rennie and Mike Vogel’s conflicted U.S. Special Forces Iraq War veteran Barbie were key figures in the show, with their redemption stories and relationships beneath the dome being major attractions that kept viewers engaged. Although these characters were concluded with the series’ termination, many of the actors who portrayed them continue to shine in television productions today.
Natalie Martinez (Linda Esquivel)
Isolated from her husband within the dome, deputy and eventually sheriff Linda Esquivel (portrayed by Martinez) ultimately chose to give up her life to protect Barbie. Following her departure from the show, Martinez effortlessly landed lead roles in numerous promising television series on networks, however, these shows unfortunately did not last long.
2015 saw me sharing the screen with Ryan Phillipe and Juliette Lewis in the gripping ABC adaptation of the Australian detective series “Secrets and Lies.” I then took on the role of an MMA fighter in the drama “Kingdom,” followed by a stint as a Chicago detective on the short-lived procedural “APB” and later as a refugee from the future in the sci-fi series “The Crossing.” In 2019, I produced and starred in the critically maligned Netflix sci-fi miniseries “The I-Land,” followed by appearances in “The Fugitive,” “The Stand,” and “The Twilight Zone” in 2020. Most recently, I’ve been cast in the upcoming Vince Vaughn-led Apple TV+ detective black comedy, “Bad Monkey,” set to release in 2024.
Rachelle Lefevre (Julia Shumway)
Following the conclusion of her character Julia Shumway in the final episode of “Under the Dome”, Canadian actress Rachelle Lefevre continued to appear regularly on television. She participated in two reality shows, namely “Nuclear Nerd Games” and “Battle of the Network Stars”. Additionally, she made guest appearances on notable series such as “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”, the original “Law & Order”, and “Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams”.
After leaving “Under the Dome,” Lefevre has taken on some brief leading roles in various TV series. In 2019, she portrayed a lawyer specializing in overturning unjust convictions on the Fox show “Proven Innocent.” She was part of the cast for the second season of the Lifetime series “Mary Kills People” in 2018. More recently, Lefevre made her debut in the Hallmark universe, appearing in both the romantic comedy “Moriah’s Lighthouse” and the mystery “The Secrets of Bella Vista.
Alexander Koch (James ‘Junior’ Rennie)
Since the conclusion of “Under the Dome,” Alexander Koch, who played Junior Rennie, has taken on limited acting roles, some in music videos. In 2017, he made an appearance in a music video for Julie Michaels, a Grammy-nominated artist, for her debut single “Issues.” More recently, in 2019, he was featured in a music video for the indie rock band from Brooklyn, Vivian Girls, for their song “Something to Do.
In 2018, Koch made a guest appearance on the Facebook Watch series “Sorry For Your Loss,” starring Elizabeth Olsen. Following this, he was featured in three episodes of the brief-running CBS military drama “The Code,” and later, he played Pete Daily in three episodes of “Lucifer” after its shift to Netflix. In 2022, Koch guest-starred on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” and in 2023, he featured in the Netflix romantic-comedy “Happiness for Beginners,” themed around hiking.
Mike Vogel (Dale ‘Barbie’ Barbara)
Since Mike Vogel wrapped up his role as Barbie in “Under the Dome”, he’s taken on various main roles. Immediately after the series concluded, Vogel appeared in the Hallmark romantic movie “In My Dreams” alongside JoBeth Williams and Katharine McPhee. The year following that, he was chosen for the Syfy miniseries adaptation of Arthur C. Clarke’s 1953 novel “Childhood’s End”, a production that shares some parallels with “Under the Dome”.
Between 2017 and 2018, Vogel appeared in the NBC military action series “The Brave,” which unfortunately ended after just one season. Following this, he portrayed Cooper in the two-season Netflix adult drama series “Sex/Life.” In 2021, while working on “Sex/Life,” Vogel convincingly portrayed JFK in the “Death Valley” segment of the “American Horror Story” season “Double Feature.” More recently, he has been cast as attorney Bill Boltz in the Prime Video crime series “Scarpetta,” alongside Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis.
Dean Norris (James ‘Big Jim’ Rennie)
Actor Dean Norris, known for his role as Big Jim on “Under the Dome,” has continued to maintain a steady flow of work following the series. This has been evident in his numerous guest appearances since then, which include voice acting roles on shows like “American Dad!”, “Sofia the First,” and “Mack & Moxy.” In 2015, he portrayed Ben Franklin in the History miniseries “Sons of Liberty” and has since appeared in recurring roles on comedic series such as “The Big Bang Theory” and “Girlboss.
Between 2017 and 2022, Norris portrayed Uncle Daddy in the dark comedy series “Claws,” which revolves around a nail salon in New Orleans that intertwines with organized crime. Later, he featured in the sitcom “United States of Al” as character Art Dugan and starred in “Nova Vita.” Since the end of “Under the Dome,” Norris has made appearances on various shows such as “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” “Better Call Saul,” “Sons of Liberty,” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” among others.
Aisha Hinds (Carolyn Hill)
Following her role under “Under the Dome,” Aisha Hinds took on some minor parts before securing a significant role in Ryan Murphy’s hit series “9-1-1.” In 2015, she made an appearance in an episode of the teen sex comedy spoof series “Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp.” Later, Hinds portrayed Harriet Tubman in the second season of the historical drama “Underground” and was a key player in the miniseries “Shots Fired.
2018 saw actress Jasmin Savoy Brown take on the character of Voletta Wallace in the crime drama “Unsolved,” delving into the murders of Tupac Shakur (portrayed by Marcc Rose) and Biggie Smalls (Wavyy Jonez). The same year, she made her debut as paramedic Henrietta “Hen” Wilson on the series “9-1-1.” In 2021, this role expanded to include a crossover to the spinoff series of “9-1-1,” titled “9-1-1: Lone Star.
Britt Robertson (Angie McAlister)
After departing from “Under the Dome,” Britt Robertson continued to make appearances in notable television shows. She portrayed a recurring character as an assistant in the comedy show “Casual.” In 2017, she landed the lead role of Sophia Marlowe, a businesswoman, on the series “Girlboss.” The following year, Robertson lent her voice to the animated series “Tangled” for the character Vex. She then joined the cast as a public defender in the ABC Shondaland series “For the People,” and appeared in both “Little Fires Everywhere” and “Big Sky.
In 2022, she landed the role of an FBI agent in the brief-running spinoff of “The Rookie,” titled “The Rookie: Feds.” Regrettably, this show didn’t last long, but her character was featured on a few episodes of the original series. As reported by Deadline, plans are underway to reintroduce her character in future episodes of “The Rookie” in the near future.
