The Voice: One Artist Made History By Joining Gwen Stefani’s Team, And Now I’m Questioning If I Even Understand The Rules To This Show

As a die-hard fan of The Voice since its inception, I must say that Season 26 has left me more bewildered than a cat on a hot tin roof! I’ve watched every twist and turn, every Block and Steal, but nothing could have prepared me for the new rule unveiled this season. Last week’s episode left me questioning whether I had accidentally smoked Snoop’s stash instead of my usual Earl Grey!

As a dedicated fan of reality singing competitions, I must warn you all – brace yourselves for some minor spoilers from the recent September 30th episode of The Voice Season 26! If you haven’t had the chance to catch up yet and want to enjoy this season unspoiled, I strongly recommend investing in a Peacock subscription. Trust me; it’s worth it – I’ve been following these shows for years, and they never disappoint. Keep an eye out for some exciting performances and emotional moments that are sure to leave you on the edge of your seat!

Ever since the first season, I’ve been a faithful viewer of “The Voice”. Despite changes like team sizes, Blocks, and Steals over the seasons, I thought I had a solid understanding of how things operate. However, that confidence was shaken with the arrival of Season 26 in the 2024 TV schedule. Last week’s premiere brought a fresh rule that feels like it upends the very essence of this singing competition, and a record-breaking performance during the Blind Auditions has left me doubting everything I thought I knew about the show. Could I have accidentally stumbled upon Snoop’s secret stash?

33-year-old artist Felsmere performed “Some Kind of Wonderful” on September 30th’s episode, and it seemed she was feeling incredibly wonderful when Gwen Stefani and Michael Bublé swiveled their chairs in response. In the end, Felsmere chose to join Team Stefani, thereby becoming a notable contestant in the annals of The Voice history. As Felsmere shared:

Previously, during the inaugural season of The Voice, I found myself among the contestants. This marked the initial occasion where an individual had returned as a solo artist after being part of a team previously. At that time, I was relatively young and quite shy. Now, I’m back with a fresh sound and I’m eagerly anticipating the coaches’ positive reception to it.

Wow, did you really manage that? Frankly, I didn’t expect something like this to occur, given it’s the first time in 26 seasons. Honestly, I assumed it wasn’t possible! Normally, we see artists who return for another shot after failing to turn a chair during Blind Auditions. But this time, returning after being part of a team was unforeseen by me.

If you’ve been a fan of the show for the last 13 years and haven’t heard the name Felsmere, it’s because in 2011, the singer who goes by that name today, Kelsey Rey, was only 20. She made her debut on the show with the song “American Boy,” which impressed coaches Adam Levine, CeeLo Green, and Christina Aguilera enough to turn their chairs. (Luckily for Felsmere, Gwen Stefani didn’t let Blake Shelton’s lack of interest in her audition hold her back!)

In the end, Kelsey Rey became part of Team CeeLo, but her journey ended during the Battles when she performed “Unwritten” alongside The Thompson Sisters. This might imply that she isn’t particularly fond of the movie “Anyone But You” as this song gained renewed popularity through her rendition.

Upon a brief exploration of the web, I found no solid proof to support my belief that contestants can’t rejoin a team once they’ve been on it – it seemed almost implausible that I could convince The Voice of my superior understanding of their competition dynamics. It appears this notion stemmed more from pride, given my confusion over the introduction of Coach Replay during Season 26 last week.

To clarify, let me express that my bewilderment is in no way a sign of disrespect towards Felsmere. Her initial performance on The Voice was, as she put it, the “highlight of her life,” and I’m genuinely ecstatic that she’s been granted this chance once more after all these years, following so much personal growth.

To stay current with Felsmere and the other Season 26 artists on “The Voice”, tune in every Monday at 8 p.m. ET, beginning October 7, only on NBC. Tuesday episodes will follow from October 8, also airing at 8 p.m. ET.
