‘The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon’ Closes ‘The Book of Carol’ With a Major Change of Scenery

As a long-time fan of The Walking Dead, I have seen my fair share of heartbreak and triumph, but nothing quite compares to the rollercoaster ride that is following Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier’s journey. The season finale of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol was a masterclass in storytelling, taking us on an emotional rollercoaster as our favorite duo finally escaped France, only to find themselves in yet another precarious situation.

Viewers of “The Walking Dead” don’t always receive their desired outcomes. However, characters like Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier often obtain what is necessary for them. In the season finale of “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol,” Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride’s longstanding zombie fighters manage to flee France, though not exactly as they had planned. Initially, it seemed that Daryl and Carol would part ways, as their rescue pilot Ash (Manish Dayal) couldn’t accommodate both on the aircraft. Despite this, Daryl chooses to remain, with Carol willing to make the sacrifice by taking his place. Eventually, a last-minute intervention by the French military forces arriving just before takeoff allows both characters to continue their journey together.

Overpowered, Daryl seemed surrounded by too many enemies until Carol miraculously arrived just in the crucial moment to shield him from harm. Ash and potential savior Laurent (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi) successfully escaped, plotting a path towards the Commonwealth and potentially alerting Daryl and Carol’s comrades of their current location in Europe. Whether they manage to do so remains uncertain, a question that might be answered in future seasons – or perhaps in another spinoff series.

Subsequently, the final moments revolve around Daryl and Carol’s subsequent actions, as they seek a new route back home. Their idea to traverse to London through tunnels seems promising at first, but it soon leads them into an underground confrontation with glowing zombies and bat excrement that induces hallucinations (yes, you read correctly). Having survived numerous challenging situations throughout their journey, Daryl and Carol find the strength to carry on, overcoming their personal struggles: Carol dealing with the long-standing grief of losing her daughter Sophia, and Daryl having one last opportunity to bid farewell to Isabel’s spirit (portrayed by Clémence Poésy).

The series finale finds Daryl and Carol venturing deeper into a tunnel accompanied by “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” reminiscent of the episode’s opening where Laurent and Daryl sang this Rolling Stones tune together. This is not just a melodious echo, but a subtle hint that their plan to journey from France to London might face unexpected obstacles. Filming for Daryl Dixon’s third season has already commenced in Spain, leaving us wondering how Carol and Daryl will find themselves there. At this moment, the specifics of their arrival remain a mystery. However, moving these characters to another country was a decision made without much hesitation by the show’s creators.

David Zabel, showrunner and executive producer, shares with The Hollywood Reporter that France provided a refreshing boost for the team, prompting them to maintain this nomadic lifestyle. “On a narrative standpoint,” he explains, “our characters shouldn’t find solace in one place. The series should feel like a journey, with our protagonists constantly on the move to return home. By the end of season two, they’re heading somewhere new, though we’re not yet sure where exactly that is. What we do know is that this unpredictable path will keep our characters in a state of struggle and determination as they strive to reach their destination.

On another note,” he adds, “we have the opportunity to introduce an entirely new culture, history, taste, vibrancy, art, architecture. This is going to be thrilling for reimagining the series. It seemed like every indication pointed towards us proceeding and venturing to a new location. In seasons five and six, it could very well be a different destination. They’ll keep journeying until they return home!

Zabel shared that he has a fantastic idea up his sleeve, which he’s discussed with Norman. However, they haven’t confirmed if there will be a season four yet. Moreover, the direction for Daryl and Carol could hinge on an unpredictable element beyond their control – the decisions made by the wider Walking Dead franchise.

As a creative force behind this franchise,” I find myself with quite a bit of autonomy, as I frequently collaborate with our Chief Creative Officer Scott M. Gimple. He’s given me the green light, telling me, ‘Feel free to explore, at least for now. Keep pushing boundaries.’ However, I can’t predict the future and how other characters’ actions might impact Negan’s (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) journey. Whether he’ll embark on a Hudson river voyage leading him to Europe is something that remains uncertain.

Regardless of what lies ahead for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, the story will revolve around the evolving relationship between Daryl and Carol. According to Zabel, there’s still much unexplored ground for these characters who, though rooted in their homeland, can be seen as classic Americans with limited global experiences. Their reasons for staying close to home offer an exciting opportunity, he believes, to expose them to new and uncharted territories, allowing them to encounter things they may have only read about or seen in pictures, now living it in reality.

He goes on to explain that for the viewers, it’s an opportunity to visualize the apocalypse in different parts of the globe. This way, they can share the same experience as the characters. It’s almost like saying, ‘I’ve only seen the Eiffel Tower in photos, but now I’m right next to it… and there are zombies standing next to it too.’
