The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon The Book of Carol Ending, Explained

As a die-hard fan of The Walking Dead, I must say that the latest twist has left me both saddened and intrigued. Jacinta’s selfless act was a poignant reminder of the depth of friendship and love that exists even in the most dire of circumstances.

In a concise span of six episodes, the second season of “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon,” titled “The Book of Carol,” packed quite a punch with its action-packed sequences. The narrative kicks off with simultaneous journeys – Daryl (Norman Reedus) engages in fierce battles to safeguard Laurent (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi), while Carol (Melissa McBride) embarks on a desperate quest to France, hoping to locate her cherished friend. By the fourth episode, the long-awaited reunion of these friends takes place. The remaining two episodes see them navigating their journey together, leading up to the climax that sets the stage for Season 3.

The Key Events Leading Up to the Season Finale

In this scene, Carol navigates towards The Nest and, assisted by Codron (Roman Levi), confronts adversaries in search of Daryl. Upon meeting Isabelle (Clémence Poésy), who seems to have a strong bond with Daryl, she strives to make her feel at ease and shield her from danger despite the grim prognosis.

Despite Daryl’s eagerness for information from Carol, time is scarce, as he needs to locate Laurent urgently. With Carol tagging along, their search doesn’t lead them to the expected cave where Laurent was supposed to wait with Fallou (Eriq Ebouaney). Instead, Daryl employs his tracking abilities to trace their possible path. This investigation eventually brings them to the residence of an elderly couple, Theo (Francois-Éric Gendron) and Didi (Marie-Christine Adam). They disclose that they did indeed encounter Laurent and Fallou and provided them with a vehicle.

Carol and Daryl are invited to stay temporarily while Daryl searches for another vehicle to repair for their ongoing journey. However, Marion Genet (Anne Charrier) catches up with them before they depart. It was revealed that Theo had betrayed them due to concerns about the potential consequences if he didn’t disclose the truth. In a shocking turn of events, Carol ends Genet’s life in an appalling manner, employing the very Amper serum Genet had been developing, which effectively set Genet ablaze. With their safety now assured, they eventually meet up with Laurent once more. Their next step is to locate Ash (Manish Dayal) and make their way back home.

The Journey to Find Ash

Three individuals journeyed to Ash’s arriving plane, yet he was absent. It seemed as though Laurent had no desire to travel to America, fearing that those who associate with him invite death. He wished to protect Daryl from a similar fate. However, he eventually changed his mind. Following the news of Genet’s demise, Sabine (portrayed by Tatiana Gousseff) sought assistance from Losang (played by Joel de la Fuente). In response, he combined The Nest and Pouvoir under one banner, with a shared aim: locate Laurent and persuade him to guide them towards the “promised land.

In the narrative, Codron enters Fallou’s settlement, asking for refuge and absolution. He demonstrates his loyalty when Daryl appears, and Codron aids Laurent in slipping away before he is captured. Fallou delivers a harsh rebuke to Daryl, implying that if he requires Laurent as evidence, then Daryl’s faith is not genuine. In the ensuing chaos of their escape attempt, Daryl ends up killing Losang.

As a devoted movie buff, I stumbled upon Ash at Maison Mère, where amidst my search for aviation fuel for our plane, I was unfortunately knocked out by a stampeding herd. Daryl, being the charming and well-connected individual he is, managed to secure the necessary fuel from Anna (Lukerya Ilyashenko). Naturally, I found myself perplexed upon Carol’s return with a fully-grown man and a young boy. When she finally shared the truth about her daughter, I was enraged. However, what struck me the most was Ash’s revelation that our small plane could only accommodate three people, which poses a significant challenge for us moving forward.

With Losang deceased, Jacinta (Nassima Benchicou), his trusted confidante, pursues Laurent relentlessly, enlisting any potential allies to aid in their location. This quest eventually brings her into contact with Anna, who sees an opportunity for self-preservation by betraying Daryl and the others. Though her actions lead them towards the right path, they also unwittingly steer them into a deadly trap of hidden walkers. While her motives remain unclear, in the end, this choice ultimately seals her fate. However, Jacinta and her companions manage to find the plane despite Anna’s involvement.

Despite his ongoing anger towards Carol’s deception, Ash channels his energy into repairing the plane to return home. However, Daryl successfully communicates with Ash, reminding him of their original mission to rescue a child, which Ash can still accomplish. Carol chooses to remain behind and asks Ash to take Daryl and Laurent back home instead. Nevertheless, Daryl has different ideas, and he and Ash come to an agreement that it would be wiser for Daryl to stay put while Carol boards the plane with Ash and Laurent.

When Jacinta discovers their whereabouts, Ash must promptly get the plane airborne. Daryl struggles valiantly to halt Jacinta’s men, creating a clear path for Ash to take off. Meanwhile, Daryl pursues a motorcyclist who is closing in on the plane and firing at it. In a crucial moment, Daryl fires back and successfully hits his target, averting the crisis.

In a split second, I find myself face to face with an oncoming vehicle. Daryl tenses up, readies his gun, and prepares for the decisive shot. Alas, he’s out of bullets. Just as I brace for impact, another gunshot echoes, causing the driver to swerve away, paving a safe path for me. It was Carol who saved me, firing the shot from behind. Knowing her time is running short after being bitten during our journey through the tunnel with Anna, and with Laurent having left the country, Jacinta takes matters into her own hands, ending her life with a self-inflicted gunshot to the head.

Daryl is glad Laurent is safe and now wants to return home too, so they can be together again with his other loved ones. Fortunately, thanks to Fallou, Daryl and Carol meet helpful people from Scotland who may guide them to England, their next step towards America. Daryl and Codron make up, enjoying a heartwarming moment by the fire. As Fallou chooses to stay put, Daryl and Carol continue their journey. Carol expresses her sadness over losing Sophia, finding comfort in Daryl’s presence during her tears. “We keep going,” he encourages her, emphasizing their resilience.

As their trip resumes the following day and they venture into a cave en route to their goal, they begin to experience hallucinations, discovering hazardous chemicals within. In this altered state, Codron attacks Daryl, momentarily overlooking their newly forged bond. Carol encounters a walker resembling herself, then slips into a hallucination where she sees Sophia (Madison Lintz). She narrowly escapes being bitten. Meanwhile, Daryl experiences hallucinations too, perceiving Isabelle and the spirit of his grandfather.

In a scene echoing when Michonne from “The Walking Dead” was drugged by Virgil, leading to hallucinations putting everyone in grave danger, fortunately concluded with both Daryl and Carol unscathed. They managed to locate gas masks for survival until they could exit the cave safely. As they walked on, Carol told Daryl, “Let’s go home,” and the Rolling Stones song “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” provided the fitting background music.

With filming underway in Spain for Season 3, it’s clear that our favorite duo will find themselves in Madrid at some point during their travels. This unexpected stop could either serve as a brief detour en route to England or perhaps a clever way to circumvent potential dangers. Given the complexities of their journey back to The Commonwealth, it’s unlikely they’ll take a direct path. Nonetheless, this unpredictable route promises an exciting Season 3!
