The White Lotus’ Star Walton Goggins Bitten by Snake on Set

In the latest installment of The White Lotus, it’s Walton Goggins’ character Rick, known for his grumpy demeanor on the popular show, who purchases marijuana from a shady local store. However, it appears the cannabis was cut with something else, causing Rick to have a breakdown inside a reptile exhibit at a nearby attraction. It seems that beneath his gruff exterior, Rick has a tender heart and felt compassion for the animals, believing they deserved freedom. Unfortunately, the use of real snakes during filming resulted in an actual hospital visit for Goggins when one of the reptiles bit him.

In the TV show, Rick didn’t appear afraid of snakes at all, but in actuality, Goggins is extremely scared of them. During an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live, he admitted this fear, saying “I don’t just have a phobia – it feels like there’s a missing piece in me when it comes to snakes.” “In reality,” he added, “I am terrified of snakes – really, truly scared, and I think there might be something genetically off about me with regards to snakes.

Even so, Goggins managed to keep his composure during the part where they filmed the scene of freeing snakes, a task that necessitated direct interaction with several of these creatures. He mentioned that the handler guided him through rows of cages and pointed out which ones housed venomous snakes.

As a cinephile, all that’s swirling in my mind is the initial snake-filled cage where opening it means certain death – “Don’t open that!” The rest of the scene fades into obscurity… And then they yell “Action,” and I’m left thinking, “Alright, don’t open the first one or else it’ll be game over.” The next thought? “Was it green or was it brown? Which one has a monstrous bite?

Walton Goggins Feared He Was “Dying a Slow Death”

In the end, Goggins selected the green serpent, but it clearly wasn’t in the mood for interaction. “As I was trying to extract him,” he said, “he seemed reluctant, didn’t he? And then he struck me… If only I could have remained calm — I consider myself quite composed. Like, ‘Hey, yeah, I got a snakebite…’ My response: I swear to heaven, it felt like, ‘Oh my goodness, I’ve been bitten by a snake! Oh my goodness!’

The actor was informed that the snake wasn’t poisonous, and they applied Neosporin to his wound. His anxiety subsided, allowing the filming to continue as planned. However, the following day, a show producer advised Goggins to visit the hospital for a proper examination of the bite.

“‘Am I dying a slow death?'” he wondered. “‘Is there something you know I don’t know?'”

Eventually, Goggins just required a preventative tetanus injection, which he was given. When Kimmel quipped that lawyers must’ve been involved in this situation, Goggins confirmed that they indeed were.

That’s precisely what transpired, and on that very day, someone unexpectedly asked me to put my signature. It was something like this: “‘I apologize, but you don’t seem well. By the way, could you just scribble your name here on this tiny document?’ I found myself pondering, ‘Is this a request for an autograph, or am I unwittingly giving up all my rights?’

Right now, “The White Lotus” has entered its third installment. This captivating series graces our screens every Sunday on HBO, and you can catch it streaming on Max as well.
