As a long-time fan of The Witcher series, I’ve grown attached to Geralt’s gritty adventures across the Continent. However, when Ciri was announced as the protagonist for the upcoming trilogy, my initial reaction was one of skepticism and apprehension, much like many other fans. But after reflecting on the rich narrative that has been woven around Ciri over the years, I’ve come to realize that this is a natural progression for the story, and I’m excited to see how her journey unfolds.
As Geralt of Rivia, I’ve been the leading character in The Witcher series for three primary installments. At the Game Awards, it was unveiled that my protegee, Ciri, will step into the limelight for a brand-new trilogy, taking charge where I once stood.
Unsurprisingly, some individuals online expressed their anger over the game featuring a female protagonist, yet the developers had anticipated this response.
Witcher Devs were Expecting Backlash
According to Video Games Chronicle’s conversation with the narrative director, Philipp Weber, the team anticipated that there might be pushback when they revealed Ciri as the main character in the new game, given that Geralt had been the protagonist in the previous three Witcher games and fans had grown fond of playing as him.
In essence, Weber shares the enthusiasm of Geralt fans and aims to connect with them on their wavelength. He expresses, “I genuinely enjoyed playing as Geralt, so I understand if some people feel a lingering preference for being Geralt. If this is the root of their concern, then indeed, it’s valid.
Despite some disgruntled fans, Weber clarifies that the plan for Ciri to lead the franchise was not a recent decision. “We’ve been working towards having Ciri as the main character for quite some time now,” explained Weber.
Ciri and Geralt
It’s clear that many who followed the tale of “The Witcher III” would agree that it was fitting for Ciri to assume a leading role, given her significant role in the game’s conclusion. In fact, author Andrzej Sapkowski had already established Ciri as a secondary protagonist even within the novels.
With Ciri stepping into the limelight, the series offers an opportunity to delve deeper into her narrative. Weber elaborates, “Ciri’s role as a novice Witcher opens up possibilities for us to share fresh tales about what it entails to be a Witcher. For those concerned at present, if your apprehension stems from enthusiasm, I want to assure you that our aim when we next unveil the game is to demonstrate and convince you that Ciri can make a compelling protagonist for The Witcher 4.
From what I’ve gathered so far, details about the gameplay for “The Witcher 4” remain under wraps. However, the cinematic teaser offers intriguing insights into the character of Ciri, who appears to possess abilities distinct from Geralt. Her eyes seem to have taken on a unique hue, possibly indicating night vision capabilities. Additionally, she’s shown wielding a chain linked to a gauntlet reminiscent of the Blades of Chaos from “God of War.” This equipment seems to serve dual purposes: trapping monsters and channeling magic through it for offensive attacks. As a fan, I can hardly wait to see how these elements unfold in the gameplay!
As a die-hard fan of The Witcher series, I can’t wait to catch wind of when The Witcher IV is going to be unveiled next. So far, the responses to Ciri have been overwhelmingly favorable. Regrettably, there’s no concrete date set for the game’s release just yet, but gamers like myself are confidently looking forward to it dropping on Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC at some point down the line.
