Today marks the arrival of the joint venture between Universal and Blumhouse, as they unveil a chilling preview for “The Woman in the Backyard” (hitting theaters across the country on March 28th), promising to send shivers down your spine right from the comfort of your front lawn.
In this movie, Danielle Deadwyler, who was previously nominated for BAFTA and SAG awards (as seen in ‘Till’), portrays Ramona, a woman grappling with a severe injury and overwhelming guilt following a car accident that took her husband’s life (played by Russell Hornsby from ‘Grimm’). After the tragedy, she finds herself shouldering the responsibility of raising a 14-year-old son (Peyton Jackson from ‘American Refugee’) and a 6-year-old daughter (Estella Kahiha from ‘Will Trent’) at their family farmhouse. All of a sudden, Ramona and her children spot an enigmatic, almost ghostly woman in black (Okwui Okpokwasil from ‘The Exorcist: Believer’) seated in their yard.

In the given synopsis, it’s stated that Ramona initially thinks the woman might be lost or suffering from dementia, but as she gets closer to the house, it’s evident she’s not an ordinary person and her motives are far from peaceful. Consequently, Ramona needs to gather her strength to safeguard herself and her children from this persistent woman who refuses to leave them alone.
Initially, the screenplay for this project was written by newcomer Sam Stefanak, who is recognized for works like Orphan, The Shallows, Jungle Cruise, Black Adam, and the successful Amblin release, Carry-On. In addition to Jaume Collet-Serra, Deadwyler, James Moran, and Gabrielle Ebron hold executive producer roles. Jason Blum, founder and CEO of Blumhouse, and Stephanie Allain serve as producers for this production.
As a dedicated gamer diving into a chilling horror experience, I’ve learned that suspension of disbelief is crucial for a spine-tingling movie. At New York Comic Con 2024, Jason Blum emphasized this point, stating that to fully immerse ourselves in the haunting atmosphere, we must temporarily embrace the notion that ghosts are real. In our current horror flick, Danielle skillfully sells this extraordinary situation, which might sound unbelievable if I were to reveal it. It’s almost as if we’re caught up in a whimsical fairy tale. However, Danielle effectively roots it in reality, making the tale more tangible and intensifying our emotional connection with the characters. The scarier the movie is, the deeper we are drawn into their struggles – that’s when the real terror unfolds.
