The Xbox Avatar Editor App Is the Latest Collateral Damage in Microsoft’s Quest to Discontinue VR

As a long-time Xbox gamer, I can’t help but feel a tinge of melancholy with the impending demise of the Xbox Avatar Editor app. For years, my avatar has been an extension of myself, a digital doppelganger that mirrored my ever-evolving gaming journey. Its discontinuation feels like saying goodbye to an old friend who’s moving away.

Instead of continuing with outdated customization options for over a decade, Microsoft has decided to stop supporting the Xbox Avatar Editor from January 9, 2025, onwards.

Microsoft has declared they’ll no longer allow users to modify or make new Xbox Avatars via the application. Yet, they have assured us that classic Xbox Original avatars are still usable and can be paired with available Xbox profile personalization options.

Since its debut in 2018, the Xbox Avatar Editor app has largely remained overlooked or neglected among Microsoft’s cherished offerings much like other underutilized products and features such as Google Stadia.

Microsoft announced that they are ending support for the app because of its poor user interaction and their focus on offering different types of gaming experiences, reminding us of Microsoft’s unsuccessful endeavors in virtual reality.

Microsoft is phasing out its Windows Mixed Reality platform, leading some Virtual Reality headsets to become non-operational once they lose connection to SteamVR or the Windows Mixed Reality application.

If you haven’t upgraded your Windows 11 to version 24H2 yet, you can continue using your Windows Mixed Reality VR headset until November 2026. However, you’ll need to put away your Windows VR headset for storage within the next two years regardless of whether you upgrade or not.

As an enthusiast, I’ve noticed a shift that appears odd at first glance: the disappearance of the Xbox Avatar Editor app. However, upon further reflection, it seems to be tied to the Windows Mixed Reality app. This connection might mean that we could potentially use our Xbox avatars within the Microsoft VR environment as well!

Given that Microsoft has ended official support for Windows Mixed Reality, it seems logical that they would discontinue or redirect resources previously used for maintaining the Xbox Avatar Editor app.

Purchases for Xbox Avatars made between November 1, 2023, and January 9, 2025, will be reimbursed to you. The only thing you’ll miss out on is the chance to make those amazing Xbox Avatars.

Despite any challenges or difficulties, there’s always a brighter side – for instance, the highly anticipated exclusive game from Microsoft and Xbox, Avowed (created by Obsidian Entertainment, known for Fallout: New Vegas), will be released in early February of the coming year.
