After the controversial antisemitic comments made by Ye on Twitter and the sale of a T-shirt featuring a swastika on the YEEZY website, YEEZY.com has been temporarily shut down. As of Tuesday morning, visitors to the site are met with a simple message that reads “This store is currently unavailable.” In response to inquiries from The New York Times, Shopify, the e-commerce platform hosting the YEEZY webstore, stated that the YEEZY online store was taken down due to their failure to adhere to genuine business practices and violation of Shopify’s terms of service.
On Sunday, YEEZY aired a 30-second ad in selected markets during the Super Bowl, promoting his website while he was seated in a dentist’s chair. In the commercial, he explains that he spent all the money for the ad on new teeth, and since he didn’t have enough funds left to shoot it professionally, he had to use an iPhone. Earlier, YEEZY’s online store offered various items such as T-shirts, sweatpants, shoes, all priced at $20 USD. A short while after the ad was aired, these products were removed from the site and replaced with a single white T-shirt with a black swastika called the “HH” (possibly standing for “Heil Hitler,” a Nazi Party rallying cry). Fox, the Super Bowl’s broadcast partner, has not yet commented on the content of the advertisement.
The Anti-Defamation League, an organization that fights against antisemitism, bigotry, and discrimination, stated on X that the swastika was the main symbol chosen by Hitler for the Nazis. This symbol rallied Hitler’s supporters in the 20th century and still poses a threat and instills fear among those who are targeted by antisemitism and white supremacy.
Ye (formerly known as Kanye West) has faced criticism for antisemitic comments before: he was temporarily banned from Twitter in 2022 due to a barrage of offensive posts, and was reinstated a month later. Upon his return, he expressed an apology on Instagram through a post written in Hebrew, which many people believed was generated by artificial intelligence.
At the time of writing, YEEZY has yet to make a statement on its suspension from the platform.
