Kingma, born in Amsterdam on Feb. 25, 1967, launched his film career by working as a projectionist at local cinemas, and later found himself assisting with production on Dutch films and Robert Altman’s “Vincent & Theo” (1990), which was filmed in part within the Netherlands.

Starting from 1989, he relocated to Hollywood. Prior to that, he worked as a correspondent for the Dutch magazine known as “Hitkrant.” In 1992, he became a member of the HFPA (Hollywood Foreign Press Association) and since then, he has been capturing movie premieres, press conferences, and other significant Hollywood events through his photography.

He served on the HFPA board of directors multiple times and was elected president twice.

As president, Kingma facilitated negotiations that resolved a prolonged disagreement between the HFPA and Dick Clark Productions concerning the Golden Globes production. He initiated the association’s involvement in Comic-Con in San Diego, launched roundtable interviews on diverse topics outside entertainment like Lech Walesa, Julian Assange, and Niki Lauda, and advocated for HFPA members to join set visits and press conferences.

In 2015, terrorists targeted the Paris branch of the weekly publication Charlie Hebdo, resulting in the deaths of 12 individuals and injuries to 11 others, mere days before the Globes ceremony. During that year’s broadcast, Kingma expressed his backing for free speech and journalistic protection, stating: “The freedom of artistic expression … serves as a guiding light worldwide. We stand together, from North Korea to Paris.

Characterized by his witty personality and cheerful disposition, Kingma was an enthusiastic advocate for the Humanitarian & Philanthropy Association’s charitable initiatives. He spearheaded campaigns that resulted in a significant $2 million contribution to Los Angeles City College, specifically benefiting its Film and Television department. Over the years, Kingma also held a position on the LACC Foundation’s board of directors.

From the year 2017 onwards, he served as the CEO for Film Expo Group, an organization responsible for hosting events such as ShowEast in Miami, CineEurope in Barcelona, and CineAsia in Bangkok. Additionally, he maintained his role as a voter for the Globes, and was one of the founding members of the Golden Globe Foundation.

Kingma’s photos have been featured in magazines across the Netherlands, Germany, and Australia. On two occasions, he orchestrated the World Press Photo exhibition in Beverly Hills, and he always enjoyed traveling to Cuba.

At the HFPA’s annual grants dinner in 2014, shortly following Robin William’s death, Kingma encouraged the attendees not to mourn his passing quietly, but to honor his memories by clapping for the outstanding performances and happiness he had shared with countless people.

Therefore, let’s unite with Theo’s friends and work associates to honor his life and achievements, and reminisce about the numerous moments he brought happiness, by sharing a hearty chuckle,” the announcement suggested.

Living on are his mom, Nel, his sister, Tessa, and his niece, Sveva. In remembrance of him, contributions can be made to the Pablove Shutterbugs photography program, a charity where he was a regular contributor.
