The schedule for upcoming Marvel TV series is nearing an exciting phase, with “Daredevil: Born Again,” set to debut in 2025, gaining significant attention. Despite the buzz surrounding the show, there’s been a fair amount of discussion about its creative evolution. It seems that numerous alterations were implemented during production, and so far, these changes have generally been well-received by fans. Recently, Charlie Cox has candidly shared his thoughts on how the superhero drama initially “wasn’t quite hitting the mark” before the modifications were introduced.
As a movie critic, I must admit that it’s quite frequent for TV shows to evolve during their production phase. However, the upcoming series “Born Again” seems to have undergone some major transformations from its initial conception. With the show set to premiere soon, Charlie Cox, the lead actor, shared insights with SFX Magazine about the changes we can expect.
In particular, Cox pointed out how the production underwent a significant shift after the 2023 writers strike, which was subsequently followed by the SAG-AFTRA strike. The British actor didn’t mince words when discussing the internal debates behind these alterations: they were nothing less than an “argument” within the team about the show’s direction.
After the event, there was a change in direction, as we initially moved forward on an engaging and suitable path. However, when considering our return after many years, there was a debate about not simply repeating the past. Marvel scrutinized the episodes and realized that the approach wasn’t quite fitting. Instead of persisting with the original plan, they filmed an entirely new pilot and restructured what had been shot to give it a more familiar feel, similar to the show we produced years ago. Considering the enormous effort involved in such a transformation, their success is truly remarkable.
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I haven’t had the pleasure of watching it myself, but the trailers for “Born Again” have left me intrigued. It appears to be continuing the storyline exactly where its Netflix counterpart ended in 2019, and not just from a narrative perspective. The raw and intense mood seems to align perfectly with the original series’ tone, which was nothing short of exceptional. Given how impressive the streaming version was, I can confidently say that this continuation holds great promise.
More on Daredevil: Born Again
I’d like to discuss a scene from the Daredevil: Born Again trailer, as I’m unsure if it represents an Easter egg or a significant plot point.
By the end of 2023, it became known that Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige was dissatisfied with the episodes of the Daredevil sequel series that had been produced so far. The primary writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman were let go from their roles, along with the original directors, due to this feedback (however, they remain credited as executive producers). As a consequence, Dario Scardapane, who previously worked on The Punisher, was enlisted to fine-tune the project and make it more in line with its origin show. Actors Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio also played a part in steering the series back on track.
Initially, the early version of “Born Again” was said to have a more scattered structure and a distinct rhythm. Several new characters were initially intended to make brief appearances, with Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson expected to appear briefly as Karen Page and Foggy Nelson. However, following the restructuring, their roles expanded significantly, and they became permanent cast members alongside Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, Jon Bernthal, and other returning series regulars.
Regarding its television debut, the DD series has taken an interesting path to reach our screens. The main cast and production team, including Charlie Cox, appear satisfied with how things unfolded in the end. Personally, I’m optimistic about the show at this moment, eagerly hoping that the initial nine-episode season will meet expectations.
On March 4th, “Daredevil: Born Again” makes its debut and can be accessed by those with a Disney+ subscription. To prepare for this exciting event, take some time to delve deeper into the storyline by streaming the initial series, as well as other titles set within the Defenders’ section of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which are currently available.
