There’s A Moana Callback In Moana 2 That Gave One Director ‘Goosebumps,’ And I Was In The Same Exact Boat

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in virtual worlds and stories, I can confidently say that Moana 2 is not just another Disney sequel – it’s a testament to the power of storytelling and character development. The moment when Moana declares “I am Moana” at the beginning of the movie brought me back to my first watch of the original, and I couldn’t help but feel the goosebumps creeping up my arms once again.

2016’s “Moana” stands out as one of the finest productions from Walt Disney Animation Studio, a remarkable achievement given it was released post-Renaissance Era. Upon learning about a sequel, I harbored some doubts. Yet, with “Moana 2” now filling cinemas and raking in the impressive box office numbers predicted before Thanksgiving, I can’t help but discuss an instance that echoes the original film. Interestingly, this moment moved one of the directors to have goosebumps, as TopMob discovered.

In a recent conversation during the promotional event for “Moana 2” in Oahu, Hawaii, I spoke with directors David Derrick Jr., Dana Ledoux Miller, and Jason Hand. During our discussion, I inquired about their favorite references from the initial film. I found Hand’s response particularly captivating when she shared that…

In ‘Beyond’, when Moana proclaims, “I am Moana”, she is not only identifying herself but also laying the groundwork for her upcoming adventure, which will ultimately transform her in a way she could not have anticipated at the film’s start. I found this repeated declaration particularly impactful as it signifies both where she stands at the moment and her readiness to embark on a journey that might change her fundamentally. However, the journey doesn’t turn out as expected; she does evolve but in ways that surpass mere self-revelation or transformation into a different person.

In the video you see, you can review everyone’s responses, but what sets Jason Hand apart is that his response perfectly highlights the significance of the moment for the film. To support his argument, Ledoux Miller included additional insights in his response.

I got goosebumps the first time.

Absolutely, I can understand why she feels that way. We’re both in the same predicament… or should I say, sailing the same canoe. When Moana proclaimed who she was atop the hill in Motunui at the start of Moana 2, I got goosebumps too. The sequel takes place three years after the original movie, and it’s clear that the Polynesian wayfinder has grown and matured since her first great adventure. Given the higher stakes for her and the people of her island, this growth is entirely fitting.

The young woman is tasked with navigating waters more distant than she’s ever ventured before, even surpassing the journeys of her ancestors, all in an effort to protect her community. Throughout the melody, she ponders “what lies ahead,” unsure of what awaits her, but must have faith in her own abilities. As Hand expressed:

Wow, it was truly impactful! That particular scene resonates strongly with people, and I believe that’s due to its emotional depth. Yet, it also serves as a precursor to the remainder of the movie.

In the climax of the movie, Moana proclaimed her name at a crucial juncture, just as the main character needed reinforcement. At this instance, Grandma Tala appeared (from beyond life) to remind Moana of her greatness and worthiness. During the sequel’s screening, I was on the verge of tears when, right from the start, Moana recited a line from a song that resonated from the end of the first film, signifying that she has internalized those valuable lessons.

It’s worth noting that Lin-Manuel Miranda didn’t create the tunes for this movie like he did in the first Moana film. Instead, the songs were penned by Emily Bear and Abigail Barlow of the Unofficial Bridgerton musical. I find myself repeatedly playing their compositions! Bravo to them for giving Dana Ledoux Miller and me goosebumps.
