‘These Guys Are All Rich And Fat’: DWTS’ Val Chmerkovskiy Recalls What He Learned After Being ‘Humbled’ During His First Season On The Show

As a long-time enthusiast of dance and reality television, I can’t help but admire Val Chmerkovskiy‘s journey on Dancing With The Stars (DWTS). His story is an inspiring reminder that even those with seemingly unshakable confidence can learn from humbling experiences.

In the recent Season 33 of the beloved dance competition “Dancing With the Stars”, fan-adored professional dancer Val Chmerkovskiy did not take home the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy. Yet, an earlier triumph was in store for him, as he presented the trophy to his wife Jenna Johnson and her partner Joey Graziadei following their victory in Season 32 with Xochitl Gomez. This win signified Val’s third triumph since he started as a pro back in Season 13. However, his journey was not always smooth sailing; he admitted that he received a swift reality check during his debut season.

On the Lightweights Podcast with Joe Vulpis, Chmerkovskiy shared his initial confidence about outshining the veterans when he joined DWTS , but reality turned out differently. Instead, he remembered the experience as both humbling and enlightening.

During my initial stint, I walked in thinking, “These individuals are all wealthy and plump. I’ll enter with my skills, endurance, and agility, and simply steamroll over everyone.” However, it didn’t turn out that way as I ended up being the second to be eliminated, though perhaps I should have been the first. The experience quickly brought me down to earth.

It’s understandable that he seemed so self-assured, given that he was relatively fresh to “Dancing With the Stars.” Previously, he had graced the show as an amateur participant, which may have led him to believe that he understood the intricacies of winning. Additionally, he boasted a successful background in competitive dancing and had witnessed his brother, Maksim, flourish on the show, likely contributing to his self-confidence.

On the contrary, being a professional dancer involves more than just excelling at dance; it requires skills in choreography, teaching, and television presentation as well. In this regard, Dmitry Chmerkovskiy emphasized the unique set of abilities professionals must possess.

During my first season on Dancing with the Stars, I believed I would excel, but I fell short. This is because there’s an entirely distinct set of skills required. You need to be an excellent teacher, a creative choreographer, and a captivating performer. Performing skills are divided into two parts: as a dancer and as a screen personality. The veterans, the legends who have numerous wins, possess all three abilities. On the other hand, in the competitive world, it’s not just about athleticism and physical discipline that counts.

It took some time for Chmerkovskiy to really find his footing on the show, but it all paid off.

Although his second season saw a minor improvement with him placing tenth instead of eleventh, his fortunes drastically changed over the subsequent two seasons, culminating in third place finishes for one and a second-place finish for the other.

In Season 15, which was an all-star season, he began doubting his chances due to his less than stellar performance during the regular season.

Indeed, the professional dancer openly admitted that he developed a strong connection with his dance partner, Kelly Monaco. As a result, they managed to advance all the way to the finals. Chmerkovskiy considered this season as a significant milestone for him, since he had the privilege of working with an exceptional partner and further refined his skills to become a more accomplished professional on DWTS.

In the subsequent season, he advanced even further alongside Zendaya, leaving many, including me, disappointed to this very moment that they didn’t take home the grand prize. (Here “He” refers to a sports figure or actor, and “it” refers to a championship title.)

Subsequently, he claimed victories in Seasons 20, 23, and more recently, Season 32, partnering with Rumer Willis, Laurie Hernandez, and Xochitl Gomez respectively.

Every now and then, Dancing With the Stars introduces fresh professionals, making it exciting to watch how they progress during their debut season. For instance, Val Chmerkovskiy appears to have learned from his past experiences, yet he doesn’t shy away from expressing self-assuredness every once in a while – after all, who wouldn’t feel that way?

Initially, Chmerkovskiy entered “Dancing with the Stars” overly confident. However, his skills have since grown, earning him the confidence that is well-deserved. We’re eagerly anticipating his continued success on ABC’s series! The latest season of “DWTS” can be streamed with a Disney+ subscription.
