‘They Say Don’t Meet Your Heroes, But You Do Want To Meet Steven Spielberg.’ This BTS Story About The Famous Director’s ‘Curiosity’ Has Me In My Feels

As a lifelong cinephile who has spent countless hours poring over film reviews and biographies of legendary directors, I have to say that witnessing the camaraderie between Jon M. Chu and Steven Spielberg is nothing short of breathtaking.

Currently, Jon M. Chu is among the most sought-after directors globally, primarily due to the phenomenal success of his movie “Wicked: Part One“. This cinematic work has already become one of the top earners of the year, and it seems that it has earned a significant admirer in another highly influential director, Steven Spielberg.

In an interview with Jake Hamilton for our Reelblend podcast, Chu expressed that Steven Spielberg has met all his expectations as one of his idols in directing. Spielberg played a significant role in kick-starting Chu’s career, and they recently watched Wicked together, which led to lengthy discussions about the film afterwards. According to Chu…

Contrary to the popular advice not to meet your idols, you can’t help but wish to encounter Steven Spielberg. It was even more delightful when he invited me to watch a movie with him, in Dolby Atmos no less! We chatted for about half an hour afterwards, and I found him fascinating because he’s so inquisitive. He asked questions about the filming of certain scenes, our reasoning behind certain choices, and the blend of physical and visual effects. Plus, being a fan of musicals himself, he acknowledged the challenges involved, which was refreshing.

It would have been fascinating to eavesdrop on their conversation. Steven Spielberg, who recently brought “West Side Story” to life – a project dear to him due to his deep affection for musicals – likely had an engaging discussion with [the other person] about the challenges and nuances of directing intricate films.

Although Steven Spielberg is accustomed to creating musicals and films with extensive visual effects, West Side Story primarily relied on different techniques. Consequently, Spielberg might have had several queries for Jon M. Chu about how he managed the production. It’s impressive that someone like Spielberg, who seems to already know everything there is to know about filmmaking, continues to ask questions, suggesting his constant eagerness is what makes him an exceptional director. You can read more about their conversation in Chu’s full comments below.

In all likelihood, if many of us encountered Steven Spielberg, we’d find ourselves bombarding him with numerous questions. Chu acknowledges feeling anxious about responding to some of these queries, fearing that his methods might not align with the approval of the Academy Award winner. However, there’s no sign that this was an issue. As it stands now, it appears that Wicked is poised to win its own Oscars, given its strong chances in multiple categories.

In my experience, the closest I’ve come to Steven Spielberg is witnessing his introduction for the E.T. Adventure at Universal Studios Florida. However, this conversation suggests that if I were ever fortunate enough to meet him or conduct an interview with him, it would surpass all my expectations.

Certainly, both directors, Chu and Spielberg, are looking at a thrilling future ahead. Chu is all set to release “Wicked: Part Two” next year, while Spielberg has a secret project in the pipeline, details of which are scarce at present. It’s safe to assume that they will have much to talk about in the days to come.
