‘They Were Truly Like Mini-Movies’: Ahead Of 9-1-1: Lone Star’s Latest (And Possibly Final) Season, Rob Lowe Gets Real About The Show’s Legacy

As a long-time fan of the gripping and heartfelt 9-1-1 universe, I find myself deeply invested in the ongoing saga of 9-1-1: Lone Star. Having followed the series since its debut in 2020, I’ve grown to appreciate the intricate storylines, compelling characters, and the extraordinary performances that make it stand out among network television dramas.

Although “9-1-1” found success on ABC following its cancellation by Fox, its spinoff “9-1-1: Lone Star” remained on Fox after receiving a renewal for Season 5. However, speculation arose about the show’s future when its latest season was postponed due to strikes. As of now, no formal decision has been announced regarding the series’ continuation. As we approach the scheduled premiere of Season 5 in 2024, Rob Lowe is looking back on the show’s impact.

Although originating as a spin-off from 9-1-1, Lone Star has developed its own distinct identity and garnered a dedicated fanbase since its debut in 2020. However, when it was announced that the show wouldn’t be returning midseason 2024, along with most other scripted series following the strikes, the outlook for the procedural wasn’t promising. Additionally, the news that Season 5 would consist of only 12 episodes didn’t instill confidence in its future prospects. Amidst the ongoing speculation about the show’s fate, Rob Lowe recently spoke to Variety about the possible conclusion of the series and his favorite part of the experience:

With the understanding that this season would likely be our last, we approached it with a determination to demonstrate the potential for high-quality programming on network television. It seems as though we’re wrapping up an era of a particular type of show, though it doesn’t feel like an ending – more like a transition. We aimed to leave a lasting impression about the worth of such shows, and I believe we achieved that goal effectively. The tales we managed to narrate on a weekly basis in terms of their grandeur and scope – that’s what I’m most proud of. Essentially, each episode was a mini-movie in its own right.

Despite the uncertain future of the series, the actor who portrayed an unstable character seems genuinely appreciative for the show’s presence in his life. The show, known as “Lone Star,” has produced some remarkable episodes focusing on first responders, which undoubtedly wouldn’t have been feasible without the dedication of its talented cast and crew. The leading actor also aptly points out that each episode is akin to a mini-movie due to their high-quality production. As a fan, I eagerly await the premiere of Season 5, hoping it will further elevate the bar for cinematic storytelling.

It remains uncertain whether “9-1-1: Lone Star” will continue for a sixth season, but it’s likely that Fox won’t make a decision until all new episodes have been aired first. The series is set to debut in September, though without one of its main cast members. Sierra McClain, who played dispatcher Grace Ryder for four seasons, has left the show. It feels strange to imagine the series without her presence, and given that this could be the final season, her departure seems all the more poignant.

In the upcoming potential final season of “Lone Star,” fans can anticipate T.K. and Carlos, portrayed by Ronen Rubinstein and Rafael Silva, exploring their married life following tragic family losses. Moreover, Jackson Pace’s character, Wyatt (Judd’s son), will be promoted to a series regular, promising more captivating storylines reminiscent of mini-movies. Although there might only be 12 episodes remaining, the show has already made an impressive mark in the realm of TV procedurals. Despite feeling a little sad about its possible end, I’m satisfied with the series’ achievements throughout its run, much like Rob Lowe.

It’s uncertain when Fox will announce their decision about 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 6, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed for some positive updates. In the interim, fans can tune into Fox at 8 p.m. ET on Monday, September 23 to catch the Season 5 premiere. If you have a Hulu subscription, you can also binge-watch the first four seasons in advance.
