As a history enthusiast who has always been captivated by untold stories, I found “The Six Triple Eight” to be nothing short of profoundly moving and enlightening. The film, under the visionary direction of Tyler Perry, has shed light on an often-forgotten chapter in our country’s history – a story that has left me both humbled and inspired.
The following article contains SPOILERS for The Six Triple Eight on Netflix. If you’re not caught up with the film, you can check it out with a Netflix subscription.
If you’ve kept track of Netflix’s 2024 lineup, you know about Tyler Perry’s latest production, The Six Triple Eight. This movie is based on the true story of the U.S.’s only Women’s Army Corps unit of color during World War II, who delivered an astounding 17 million pieces of mail. Given its authentic roots, Kerry Washington shared a fascinating encounter she had with a journalist at the film’s premiere, as reported by TopMob.
In an interview prior to the film’s Netflix premiere, Washington (playing Major Charity Adams) shared a touching moment. At the premiere of “The Six Triple Eight“, there was a roll call of all the women in the regiment. A journalist spotted her great aunt’s name on this list, which led to an emotional response from Washington – she “burst into tears” because seeing her aunt’s name filled in so many gaps about her past for her.
Last night at the premiere, we spoke to a journalist who discovered that her great aunt, previously silent about her military past, was a part of the Six Triple Eight. To our surprise, her great aunt’s name was on the list of all 855 regiment members displayed outside the event. Overwhelmed by this revelation, she broke down in tears, stating, “This finally makes sense.” Many women who returned from service were not respected and faced rumors that they had been sent overseas to serve as concubines for black male soldiers. Given these circumstances, it’s no wonder so many chose to keep their experiences hidden.
Washington added that the film offers a unique chance for relatives of the soldiers from the regiment to feel an even greater sense of honor for their forebears, as it narrates a tale that might not have been anticipated.
You might ponder that every one of those women, quite a few of them having multiple offspring, themselves. Their children had children too. Thus, each woman represents a lineage spanning generations of people who can now take deeper pride in their heritage and how their family has contributed to the rich history of this remarkable nation, as well as to the global defense of democracy.
One way to rephrase the given text could be: “Tyler Perry intends viewers to grasp the vast, untold history in his movie, and Washington’s tale of a journalist uncovering her aunt’s involvement in the battalion is a compelling demonstration of this – without the film’s premiere and Perry sharing these stories, she wouldn’t have discovered this.
In collaboration with Oprah Winfrey and others, Washington shared this tale, and such instances only add to the joy – when they manage to forge a bond where one didn’t exist previously.
2024 has seen a wealth of remarkable war films, such as “Civil War” from A24, which has resonated deeply with audiences. Additionally, there have been numerous outstanding war movies centered around World War II. However, I firmly believe that “The Six Triple Eight” stands out as a groundbreaking film and offers valuable insights into history that many of us are unaware of.
