The popular original series “Farscape,” currently streaming on Peacock, presents an extraordinary alien world filled with a multitude of eccentric characters during its four-season journey from the late 1990s and early 2000s. Interestingly enough, one of Crichton’s beloved alien companions didn’t initially plan to become a regular cast member in the series.
Farscape featured Ben Browder as human astronaut John Crichton, who was blasted through a wormhole and ended up in another part of the cosmos smack dab in the midst of an intergalactic conflict between various alien groups. Matters became even more intricate when the initial companions he met upon arrival turned out to be escapees from confinement.

In Season 1, I found myself alongside Crichton and an eccentric band of characters, crossing paths with the alien Chiana, portrayed by Gigi Edgley – a rebellious, electric-blue woman who defied her oppressive alien society’s norms. Her unique spirit made her a natural addition to our crew aboard Moya, eventually earning her a permanent spot among us for the rest of the series.
Chiana was supposed to die on Farscape
Fun fact: In the original airing of “Durka Returns”, it was intended for Chiana to perish after being shot. However, the creative team recognized her character’s potential and altered the scene so that she was only grazed by the bullet. As a result, she survives and goes on to appear in more episodes.
Edgley didn’t realize that her character would have an ongoing part in the show, as Chiana only recurred in Season 1 but later became a regular from Seasons 2-4. It wasn’t until a script for the episode following her initial appearance (which was initially planned for her to die) arrived that she found out about this continuity.
I was given a script inside a dressing room… I couldn’t believe it because I wasn’t part of the next episode,” Edgley explained through The Companion. “We both sat on the couch and opened it up, and indeed, I had a few lines in that episode.
Starting then, Chiana became an integral member of Moya’s crew all through until the final chapter. She developed bonds with Crichton and the rest of the team, as well as a complex connection with the alien warrior Ka D’Argo, portrayed by Anthony Simcoe. Later, in the Peacekeeper Wars miniseries, Chiana reappeared, helping to resolve the series’ cliffhanger that occurred at the end of Season 4.
