Crash Landing on You is among the most acclaimed K-dramas of the last ten years, yet another Korean series presents an even more captivating tale of forbidden love. Featuring Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin as characters Ri Jeong-wook and Yoon Se-ri respectively, Crash Landing on You achieved global fame. The show primarily revolves around the intricate love story between a South Korean heiress and a North Korean soldier who encounter numerous obstacles in their quest to be together.
The series “Crash Landing On You” has left a lasting impression on the K-drama world. The chemistry between the two main characters was outstanding, and the supporting actors helped solidify why this K-drama is considered a masterpiece and remains popular even after seven years. Although the characters were captivating, what truly made “Crash Landing On You” unforgettable was its tale of forbidden love. Few K-dramas have ventured into exploring such a unique storyline as “Crash Landing On You”, but one exceptional example from more recent times is the 2021 drama, “Youth of May”.
Youth Of May Is About Two People Falling In Love During The Gwangju Uprising
Youth Of May Depicts One Of The Most Violent Times In South Korean History
Similar to many Korean dramas, Youth of May is based on real events and includes imaginative storylines. The series follows the lives of Hwang Hui-tae and Kim Myeong-hee, two individuals with stark contrasts in their personalities and social standings, who find themselves falling for each other. This romantic drama unfolds against the backdrop of the Gwangju Uprising, a turbulent period in South Korean history marked by student protests against martial law.
In contrast to typical Korean romantic dramas, Youth of May stands out due to its historical context during tumultuous times in Korea. Characters Hui-tae and Myeong-hee have aspirations that were temporarily paused by the intricate circumstances they faced. Yet, against all odds, they chose to be together. Like Crash Landing On You, Youth of May addresses themes that are often overlooked in K-dramas.
Like Crash Landing On You, The Odds Were Against Youth Of Main’s Lead Couple
Hui-Tae And Myeong-Hee Faced Many Challenges In Their Relationship
Right from the start, it was evident that the love story between Hui-tae and Myeong-hee wouldn’t be smooth sailing. Their romance started off intriguingly as Myeong-hee posed as her friend and went on a blind date with Hui-tae, without anticipating falling in love with him. Yet, their deceit was minor compared to the challenges they faced. Hui-tae’s father was relentless in his pursuit of arranging a marriage between Hui-tae and Su-ryeon, driven by political aspirations, and would stop at nothing to make this union happen.
Beyond just enduring the peril their union brought upon themselves, Hui-tae and Myeon-hee also needed to consider that Su-ryeon’s livelihood might be jeopardized if Hui-tae terminated his engagement with her. In addition, their relationship began to strain, which further complicated matters for Hui-tae. To make things worse, Hui-tae’s father seized them both in an attempt to keep them apart. However, they remained strong and found solace in each other amidst the hardships they encountered.
Youth Of May Is A Darker Love Story Than Crash Landing On You
Youth Of May Incorporates Dark Themes With Its Love Story
Although “Crash Landing On You” ventures into new territories, it doesn’t share the same level of grimness as “Youth of May”. In “Crash Landing On You”, Hui-tae faced challenges in his relationship with his father that kept him apart from the woman he loves. On the other hand, “Youth of May” is set during the Gwangju Uprising and contains some distressing scenes. This historical K-drama not only depicted the brutal attacks on innocent civilians, but also highlighted the harsh treatment soldiers received during their military training.
In contrast to Se-ri’s complex family ties, Myeong-hee’s father-daughter relationship is even more intricate. Unlike the emotional rollercoaster of Crash Landing on You, Youth of May is intensely heartbreaking and challenging to watch at times, yet this very quality makes it stronger. Hui-tae and Myeong-hee’s love story takes center stage in the series, but it also excels in portraying a lesser-known aspect of Korean history.
