‘This Is How It Was Supposed To Be’: Katrina Law Breaks Down Why Jessica Knight Made That Big Decision At The End Of The NCIS Season 22 Premiere

As a dedicated NCIS fan who has been following this captivating series for years, I was thrilled to see Jessica Knight‘s journey unfold in the Season 22 premiere. The episode provided a satisfying resolution to the uncertainty surrounding her character, and it was heartwarming to witness her decision to return to Washington D.C. to rejoin her NCIS family.

Warning: SPOILERS for the NCIS episode “Empty Next” are ahead!

Beyond wrapping up an engaging puzzle about Alden Parker’s history in the Season 21 finale of NCIS, it further revealed Jessica Knight accepting the position as the new Chief Instructor at Camp Pendleton for REACT. This left fans wondering if Knight would remain a prominent figure in Season 22, but Katrina Law found out early on that her character wouldn’t be departing. In the last moments of the Season 22 opener, Knight opted to decline the REACT promotion and instead return to Washington DC to reunite with her fellow NCIS team members. Prior to its debut on the 2024 TV lineup, I had an enlightening conversation with Law, who shared insights into why Knight made this significant choice.

It’s obvious that Jessica Knight will be working frequently with Parker, Nick Torres, and Timothy McGee again due to Katrina Law continuing as a main cast member on NCIS. However, it was necessary to find a convincing reason for her character to return as an NCIS agent. In our discussion, Katrina Law elaborated on this topic extensively, starting with the following:

It seems likely that one of the factors driving Knight’s desire to return was the joy she felt while at Camp Pendleton. She truly enjoyed herself there, gave up a promising new job, and left sunny California behind. Everything met her expectations. However, there was something troubling her subconsciously, which she couldn’t quite pinpoint. She might have told herself, ‘Oh, it’s just because I’ve moved, it’s a new job, it’s the usual growing pains.’ But upon seeing Parker, I believe it became clear to her that she genuinely missed and cherished her team and the work they did together.

In “Empty Nest,” Alden Parker embarked on a journey to central California to seek assistance from Jessica Knight in locating Nick Torres, who had infiltrated the Nexus drug cartel but found himself in jeopardy after his cover was compromised. In an attempt to gather information, Parker visited one of Knight’s associates, a former wife of a deceased Nexus enforcer. However, a series of events led Parker and Knight to El Padre, who, surprisingly, was a real reverend named Edward Pike. Despite lacking evidence, it appeared as though Jessica took matters into her own hands, kidnapping Pike in order to force him to disclose his true identity and the whereabouts of Torres.

Eventually, I uncovered that it was all a clever trick designed to catch out Celia Ross, a divorce lawyer secretly working for El Padre. By the episode’s end, both Ross and El Padre were arrested, and Torres was saved just in time before he fell victim to not carrying out the trainee Ross had been defending. This case, however, made me, Jessica Knight, understand that my true calling is being an NCIS agent, even though I’d been given a promotion for REACT after initially believing I might lose my job. As Katrina Law shared with me: “It was in this case that I realized my destiny.

In essence, her passion lies in the pursuit; she thrives on the exhilaration of apprehending the wrongdoer. As a Chief REACT agent, such experiences aren’t as common. When she spotted him, I believe she recognized an emptiness within herself. Despite making new connections in California, after four years of dealing with the various cases that the NCIS team has encountered, they’ve shared some incredible highs and devastating lows. Building those bonds is challenging, and I think she simply yearned for them again.

Prior to joining the NCIS team, Jessica Knight was a REACT agent. In the interval between NCIS Seasons 21 and 22, she effectively trained others for roles similar to hers. However, with Alden Parker’s arrival, she feels it is time to move on from this phase of her life. This decision became clearer to her with Parker’s presence, as Law put it at the end of our discussion:

When she returns, it feels as if the NCIS team has always been there, picking up conversation just where they left off six months ago, as if her time away in California was merely a brief detour. In essence, returning to the team feels like coming home, even though leaving wasn’t necessarily a mistake, it simply feels right for this moment in time.

In the new season of Washington D.C., Jessica Knight’s arrival coincides with some doubts surrounding Inspector General Gabriel LaRoche, who was appointed instead of McGee for the position in question during this episode. Adding to the intrigue, Jessica has a much-anticipated chat with Jimmy Palmer about their relationship, while showrunner Steven D. Binder hints at a potential “World War III” unfolding from the fourth episode onwards. This early part of Season 22 promises plenty of exciting developments!
