This Is the Best Episode of The Twilight Zone to Watch on Halloween

As a lifelong fan of The Twilight Zone and someone who has spent countless Halloweens binge-watching its eerie episodes, I can confidently say that “The Masks” is the perfect Halloween pick from this iconic series. This episode, airing during Mardi Gras in the original run but fitting perfectly for our spooky season, offers a chilling exploration of identity and the masks we wear in life – a theme that resonates deeply with the spirit of Halloween.

It’s puzzling to consider which is more unexpected: That numerous episodes of The Twilight Zone (frequently aired on SYFY) revolve around Christmas? Or that, despite being a classic horror series, none of its episodes are actually centered around Halloween?

As a dedicated fan, I’d say that’s likely because The Twilight Zone offers an array of episodes perfect for the spooky season. Sure, some episodes lean more towards sci-fi than horror, but during October, most episodes could easily fit the bill as Halloween specials. However, it might be best to save the snowy Christmas episodes, like “Night of the Meek” with its Santa Claus theme, until December rolls around.

If you’re looking for an episode from the original 156 episodes of The Twilight Zone that best captures the spirit of Halloween, then “The Masks,” airing as the 25th episode of its fifth and final season on March 20, 1964, might be your top choice.

Why “The Masks” is the best Twilight Zone episode to watch on Halloween

In contrast to Halloween, “The Masks” is based on another celebration known for mask-wearing: Mardi Gras. The story unfolds in a different setting, focusing on Jason Foster (portrayed by Robert Keith), an elderly, grumpy millionaire nearing the end of his life. He arranges for his family to spend a night at his mansion, but they dislike him just as much.

But, there’s a real reason why he’s invited them to visit. He has a special, custom-made mask for each family member that reflects their personality defects (though he sarcastically claims the Mardi Gras tradition is to wear a mask that’s the opposite of their personality). His daughter wears a subtly grotesque mask that reflects her cowardly, hypochondriac nature, and the rest of the family gets masks to match. His son-in-law is greedy, his grandson is a brute, and his granddaughter is vain. For his own mask, Jason dons a skull. All the members of his family are instructed not to remove the masks until midnight, otherwise, they’ll forfeit the inheritance that they’re so clearly only here in the hopes of getting their grubby mitts on.

It should go without saying that something happens at midnight when it’s time to remove the masks. What would an episode of The Twilight Zone be without a twist?

Although ‘The Masks’ isn’t the most frightening episode in The Twilight Zone, wearing masks gives it an eerie Halloween vibe – even if they were originally Mardi Gras masks. This is probably why The Simpsons chose to parody ‘The Masks’, though loosely, for a particularly spooky edition of their annual Treehouse of Horror special.

On All Hallow’s Eve, I get to don my imaginative garb. Whether it’s a terrifying mask, a whimsical costume, or something more alluring, Halloween offers an opportunity to step out of our everyday selves and into someone else’s shoes – even if just for a night. Yet, beneath the most outrageous disguise lies a reflection of the wearer, revealing hidden layers that are as mysterious and chilling as the Twilight Zone itself. I can’t help but wonder what a real Twilight Zone episode centered around Halloween would be like – a realm where our true identities and the masks we wear intertwine in ways that are both eerie and enchanting.
