Last year, movie producer Karan Johar teamed up with Adar Poonawalla, CEO of Serum Institute. In a major move, he sold half of Dharma Productions to this successful businessman for an astounding 10 billion rupees. On Raj Shamani’s podcast, Karan Johar discussed the growth of his production company, Dharma Productions. He explained that in order to expand, he required financial resources. The filmmaker-producer mentioned that by the year 2023, they understood the need for expansion, and if they were to grow naturally, it would have taken another 5-7 years.

He decided to sell half of Dharma Productions for an incredible 1,000 crore rupees because he needed the money to expand his business. Concerning the partnership, the creator of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani expressed great joy with Adar Poonawalla, who he described as a remarkable individual with keen insights.

When they pool resources together, the director acknowledges he must strive for project success and boost profits, since it involves other people’s funds.

At CNBC-TV18 Global Leadership Summit, Karan mentioned that teaming up with Adar Poonawalla, who is married to his friend Natasha, was an effortless choice. He added that he and Apurva (CEO of Dharma Productions) believed Adar was the perfect partner to help elevate their production company to greater success levels. In a lighthearted manner, Karan even suggested playfully renaming the company ‘Pharma Productions’ or ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Serum.’

Established back in 1976, Dharma Productions is a film production company that was initially led by Yash Johar and is currently managed by his son Karan Johar. Over the years, under the Dharma Productions label, Karan Johar has delivered numerous hit movies such as Kal Ho Naa Ho, Dostana, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Badrinath Ki Dulhania, Raazi, Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva, among others.
