As a film enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the captivating world of NCIS, I must say that the latest addition to the franchise, NCIS: Origins, is a breath of fresh air. The series’ focus on unraveling the mysterious past of Leroy Jethro Gibbs is not only intriguing but also satisfying for fans who have been yearning for answers about his enigmatic history.
As numerous installments of “NCIS: Origins” are currently broadcasted, many eager fans are witnessing the unfolding of the mysteries they’ve been longing to discover. This spin-off delves into the tumultuous past of Mark Harmon’s character, Leroy Jethro Gibbs, revealing his transformation from a novice detective in the original series to the seasoned agent we encountered earlier. Narrated by Harmon himself, this prequel had its debut on October 14, 2024. In these episodes, Austin Stowell portrays a younger Gibbs who is working at the Camp Pendleton branch of the agency. Along the way, we encounter younger versions of characters from the original series, including Vera Strickland and Mike Franks, with Tobias Fornell being the latest addition to the cast.
As a devoted fan, I’ve always been intrigued by the character of Fornell, initially portrayed by Joe Spano, who made his debut in “Yankee White” as an FBI agent clashing with Gibbs over jurisdiction. It felt like their first encounter, but little did we know that their paths had crossed long before, as revealed later on in NCIS when Fornell married Gibbs’ second wife, Diane Sterling. The mystery of their past has kept us guessing for years, but with Lucas Dixon playing a younger Fornell in Origins, there’s hope that the show will finally shed light on how these two characters truly met and perhaps fill in the plot gaps that have lingered for so long.
Tobias Fornell’s Role So Far
One of the beloved characters from NCIS, Tobias Fornell frequently appears in multiple episodes and is one of Gibbs’s longtime friends, similar to Gibbs himself. He advanced through the ranks from Junior Agent to Special Agent, much like Gibbs did. Originally portrayed as an FBI agent, it’s disclosed in season 15 that he was dismissed due to his actions. According to Gibbs, Fornell was convicted of withholding crucial evidence for a murder trial and expelled from the agency permanently. Since then, he has taken up work as a private investigator, offering assistance to Gibbs and the MCRT when needed. The bond between Gibbs and Fornell is intricate, contrasting sharply with their initial on-screen encounter that gave off a distant impression.
After my divorce with Diane, Fornell unexpectedly finds himself drawn to her, much to my dismay, and they eventually tie the knot and welcome a beautiful daughter named Emily into their lives. As Emily grows up, things take a turn for the worse when she battles mental health issues and addiction. Yet, their bond with me, their friendship, and Tobias’s unwavering love for his suffering child remained a favorite among fans. In the eighteenth season, Emily tragically passes away from an overdose, off-screen, leaving us all stunned and deeply affected. Over time, Fornell gradually withdraws from work, becoming more absent as he grapples with the immense grief of losing his daughter.
‘Origins’s Plan For Gibbs and Fornell
In my opinion, NCIS: Origins delves deep into well-known backstories, such as the chilling murder of Gibbs’s first wife and daughter, portrayed through flashbacks. It also unveils unexpected facets about Gibbs, one being his unexpected camaraderie with Lala Dominguez in episode 6, “Incognito.” As they join forces to investigate a supposed suicide, their superior contacts the FBI, and a younger Tobias Fornell is among the agents responding. At this point, their interaction has yet to occur, leaving us in suspense about their history. However, Origins seems to be following a narrative that suggests they crossed paths much earlier than “Yankee White,” possibly filling in the gaps and resolving the enigma surrounding their initial meeting.
