‘Thunderbolts’ Rumor Teases Lewis Pullman’s Sentry Costume

As a long-time comic book enthusiast and Marvel Universe aficionado, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation and excitement about the upcoming MCU film, Thunderbolts*. The latest rumors surrounding the identity of Lewis Pullman’s character, Bob, and his potential transformation into The Sentry have piqued my interest more than ever.

As the new year looms, excitement builds for another year of MCU films, particularly “Thunderbolts” which has garnered significant interest from viewers following two captivating trailers. The enigma surrounding Lewis Pullman’s character Bob is a hot topic among fans, with many speculating that he will portray the powerful and potentially dangerous hero, The Sentry, from Marvel Comics. The possibility of The Sentry in “Thunderbolts” has been hinted at since writer Robert Kirkman accidentally disclosed the character’s inclusion when “Invincible” star Steven Yeun was cast. However, Marvel Studios is maintaining a veil of secrecy regarding the character’s identity.

Although the Sentry suit hasn’t appeared in promotional materials for Thunderbolts, a recent rumor hints at some intriguing details about The Sentry’s super suit. A reliable source, known as MyTimetoShineHello on Twitter (via Heroic Hollywood), has described the suit’s appearance, which resembles the character’s comic book look with a predominantly gold color scheme and a large “S” emblem. However, in contrast to the comic version, the MCU Sentry will have a black suit, complete with boots and a cape, and instead of being fabric, the suit will appear metallic.

The material boasts a shiny, metallic appearance. Notable aspects of this suit encompass a high, contrasting black collar, which harmonizes with the golden hue of the garment, stretching into black accents along the shoulders and upper chest area. The belt is equipped with a substantial circular buckle, adorned with a gold and black ‘S’ emblem design. The lower half of the suit is golden, with reinforced black knee and shin guards that merge effortlessly into black boots. These robust-looking boots contribute to an armored feel.

The metallic sheen of the Sentry suit sounds like a callback and reference to superhero movie costumes of the 1990s, particularly films like Batman Forever, Steel, and Tim Burton’s planned Superman Lives suit for Nicolas Cage. The reveal of the black and gold suit also adds new context to the font chosen for Thunderbolts*, whose title card is a simple yellow on a black background. No official image has been revealed, but it wouldn’t be a shock if the following trailer for Thunderbolts*, possibly set to be released in February around the release of Captain America: Brave New World, doesn’t offer a brief look at The Sentry.

The Sentry vs. Superman

Originating from the creative minds of Paul Jenkins, Jae Lee, and Rick Veitch, The Sentry first appeared in 2000. This character, frequently likened to Superman from DC Comics, stands among the mightiest heroes within the Marvel Universe. However, he harbors a dual personality that transforms into his own greatest adversary, known as The Void. The Void is one of the strongest entities in comic books, so formidable that even the combined might of teams such as the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, Inhumans, and Namor struggled to contain him. It promises an intriguing spectacle watching the Thunderbolts, a team primarily composed of super soldiers and assassins, confront a force as powerful as The Sentry.

It’s intriguing that Thunderbolts will make their appearance merely two months prior to the unveiling of James Gunn’s Superman. Before DC revamps Superman’s image for a new generation, audiences in May will witness a deconstruction of the classic Superman character through Marvel Studios. The Sentry, a superhuman with flying abilities and super strength who sports an ‘S’ on his costume, may leave a lasting impression. However, the question remains: Will Marvel Studios manage to evolve The Sentry beyond being a simple Superman deconstruction, or will the character seem outdated when Superman hits theaters in 2025, promising to be one of the year’s most anticipated films?
