As a dedicated Marvel fan, I’m thrilled to pieces about the latest developments regarding Geraldine Viswanathan and her role in the upcoming MCU project, “Thunderbolts.” Although Marvel Studios has kept tight-lipped about who she’ll be playing, recent hints suggest that Viswanathan could potentially bring Melissa Gold, a.k.a. Songbird, to life on the big screen.
Marvel Studios may have given a hint about Geraldine Viswanathan’s role in the 2025 MCU film, Thunderbolts. Although details have been revealed about the return of anti-heroes like Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, and David Harbour as Red Guardian, Marvel Studios has kept quiet regarding Viswanathan’s character. Initially cast as Ayo Edebiri’s assistant, Viswanathan now plays a role described as an assistant to Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ character, Valentina “Val” Allegra de Fontaine.
As a gamer, I was excitedly waiting for the Hall H event at San Diego Comic-Con, where the cast of Thunderbolts was scheduled to appear. Although they didn’t officially announce who Geraldine Viswanathan would be playing in the event, Marvel gave us a hint through their YouTube channel.
Who Is Songbird in Marvel Comics? And Is She Appearing in Thunderbolts?
I’m a huge fan of the Marvel Comics character Melissa Gold, also known as Songbird. She was brought to life by the creative minds of Mark Gruenwald, Ralph Macchio, and John Byrne in “Marvel Two-in-One” #54 back in August 1979. Initially, she was a menacing villain named Screaming Mimi, wielding the power of supersonic screams. Eventually, she changed her ways and took on the heroic alias Songbird. With the Thunderbolts, a team of former villains masquerading as heroes, she discovered her newfound love for being a hero. As part of this team, she even reformed and joined forces with the Mighty Avengers. However, Melissa is most famously recognized for her time with the Thunderbolts, having been one of the original members and playing a significant role during their comeback during the “Civil War” saga.
Thunderbolts is primarily introducing well-known MCU characters for its lineup, but there’s a strong possibility it’s setting the stage for new members to join later on. The presence of a character named Mel in Thunderbolts, which shares a name with a comic book character linked to the team, suggests Viswanathan may be portraying this role. Thunderbolts could function as both an origin story for the team and for Viswanathan’s eventual transformation into Songbird. While there’s much buzz about Lewis Pullman playing The Sentry, Marvel Studios seems to be keeping another comic book character under wraps. Viswanathan is an up-and-coming talent, and Marvel intends to make use of her talents in future ventures. Thunderbolts might mark the start of something bigger.
