Tilda Swinton to Narrate Interactive ADHD Documentary ‘Impulse’

As a seasoned gamer and someone who has personally struggled with ADHD for most of my life, I am incredibly excited about Tilda Swinton lending her voice to “Impulse: Playing with Reality.” Having spent countless hours immersed in virtual worlds, I have always found that games can provide unique insights into the human condition.

Tilda Swinton has agreed to provide the narration for “Impulse: Playing with Reality,” an innovative docudrama that delves into Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) through a blend of reality and virtual worlds. This groundbreaking production, helmed by co-directors May Abdalla and Barry Gene Murphy, is set to make its debut at the 2024 Venice Immersive segment of the 81st Venice International Film Festival.

Swinton shared stories about the directors’ Virtual Reality project from 2021, titled “Goliath“, which delves into the psychological journey of an individual dealing with psychosis. This immersive VR experience was awarded the Grand Jury Prize for Best VR Immersive Work at the 78th Venice Film Festival and received a nomination in the outstanding interactive media innovation category for news and documentaries.

In the second part of the “Playing with Reality” series by U.K. producer Anagram, titled “Impulse“, we delve deeper into the subject of mental health conditions. This immersive documentary focuses on the lives of four individuals dealing with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), providing an insightful and personal look at how this condition influences their thinking and perception of the world.

1. Our project is based on over 100 hours spent with people exhibiting extreme ADHD traits. Among them are Leanne, who transforms her life into a game due to boredom, Omar, who finds order in his chaotic mind by planning daring heists, and Tara, who is near the point of surrender. The mixed reality style we’re using seeks to merge the known with the unknown, providing a more profound perspective on this condition.

People trying to focus on a line of reasoning or a sequence of events may be disrupted when surrounded by items in the room that trigger unexpected chaos.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m thrilled to be part of the 63 VR projects hailing from 25 diverse countries showcased during the Venice Immersive event, which coincides with the Venice Film Festival from August 28th to September 7th. Can’t wait to dive in!
