As a movie enthusiast who grew up with the magic of Pixar and Disney, I can confidently say that the upcoming Toy Story 5 is a momentous occasion for me. Having witnessed the evolution of Woody, Buzz, and their friends since their debut three decades ago, it’s a heartwarming experience to see this iconic franchise continue to captivate audiences with its clever storytelling and endearing characters.
Tim Allen has revealed he was recently doing the first session of voice work for the highly anticipated Toy Story 5, which will focus on his famous character, Buzz Lightyear. Speaking with Collider while promoting his new sitcom, Shifting Gears, Allen said the sequel has a “really good… clever, clever story.” Allen also explained that he still needs to record the third act of the film and anticipates more voice work to be done as the animated film is being produced and edited.
In December 2023, it was confirmed that Allen and his fellow star, Tom Hanks, would once again portray Buzz and Woody respectively. Speculation about the sequel’s storyline revolves around Buzz, with Andy potentially making a comeback. This could stir controversy among fans considering how Toy Story 3 concluded. However, Allen expressed enthusiasm over the studio’s creative solution: “If they hadn’t conceived a brilliant script, they wouldn’t have done it, and they wouldn’t have asked me and Tom [Hanks]. It’s quite ingenious.” He also expressed gratitude for being Buzz Lightyear.
According to reports, renowned Pixar director Andrew Stanton, known for Wall-E, and McKenna Jean Harris, famous for Luna, are set to direct the upcoming sequel. Notably, Andrew Stanton will also be penning the script. He has played an integral role in every Toy Story film, contributing significantly to the story development of the initial movie as well.
The Original ‘Toy Story’ Turns 30 Years Old Next Year
It’s hard to imagine that next year, the original “Toy Story” will be 30 years old! John Lasseter directed this groundbreaking film which went on to become one of Pixar and Disney’s most successful and beloved franchises. Although computer-generated animation is commonplace today, the idea behind “Toy Story” was quite revolutionary at the time as it wasn’t hand-drawn like traditional animations. In the late 1980s, Disney’s animated film division had faced a series of critical and financial setbacks. However, things turned around with the success of “The Little Mermaid” in 1989, leading to a resurgence for Disney. The “Lion King” (1994) was an enormous hit and marked the highest-grossing animated film at that point in time. With such success, Disney had ambitious plans for several other traditional animation projects.
Unlike the traditional fairy tale formula Disney was recognized for in movies like “Beauty and the Beast” and “Cinderella”, “Toy Story” deviated from this pattern when it was released. In contrast, “Pocahontas” was the major animated release that summer, earning a decent $141 million domestically, but its success paled in comparison to “The Lion King’s” astounding $312 million domestic gross. When “Toy Story” premiered before Thanksgiving 1995, there was initially little thought given to merchandising, yet demand for toys skyrocketed after it opened with a domestic box office of $29 million, ultimately earning $244 million globally. The “Toy Story” series has been heartwarmingly popular and has held the interest of numerous generations.
In each successive film, there was a marked improvement, leading many critics and enthusiasts to claim that Toy Story 2 (released in 1999) ranked among the best sequels ever made. A full eleven years elapsed before Toy Story 3 hit theaters in 2010, and nine more years passed before Toy Story 4 premiered in 2019, wrapping up the series beautifully – until Disney announced Toy Story 5.
The fifth installment of Toy Story, titled “Toy Story 5,” is scheduled to debut on June 19, 2026. Until then, why not revisit the other four timeless movies in the series, which are now available for streaming on Disney+.
