In the 2025 TV lineup, Tim Allen’s return to network television with his new ABC comedy, titled “Shifting Gears,” was a hit. As a result, the series was granted a second season, which isn’t particularly surprising given Allen’s history of successful comedies like “Home Improvement” and “Last Man Standing.” Interestingly, for “Home Improvement,” Allen drew inspiration from his own experiences, while for “Shifting Gears,” he made a significant, personal request. Moreover, there’s an extra element that sets Matt Parker apart.
In 1991, when “Home Improvement” first aired, Tim Allen was new to the sitcom scene. Despite mixed reviews from critics, viewers found themselves drawn to it. The ABC comedy went on to run for eight seasons and produce over 200 episodes. In an interview with WIVB in Buffalo, Allen shared the story of how “Home Improvement” came about and how it significantly impacted his TV career, setting the stage for his future success in television.
The television show ‘Home Improvement’ originated with me, as I was the one discussing topics like lawn mowing, tools, and grunting, among other things. Consequently, ‘Home Improvement’ took off from there.
Given that much of the content in “Home Improvement” and “Shifting Gears” originates from Tim Allen’s real life experiences, it follows logically that many aspects – whether big or small – are drawn from his personal life. Even with the passage of time, Allen continues to draw inspiration from his own life for these roles. This is particularly true for Matt Parker. However, it’s important to note that Matt Parker, as a character, remains distinct from both Tim Taylor and Mike Baxter. Allen has clarified that Matt Parker is an artist who had to set aside his dreams, marking him as quite different from the characters he portrays on screen.
He’s a multi-talented individual, both an artist and a designer, which sets him apart from the other characters I’ve portrayed who were typically more practical or business-oriented. Instead, this character harbors unfulfilled aspirations as a designer. Initially, he was planning to attend the Rhode Island School of Design to study industrial design. However, his father fell ill, requiring him to abandon his studies and manage the family business instead. As such, he never had the opportunity to pursue his dream career.
Beyond just quitting school, Matt also experienced tragic events such as the loss of his wife and his daughter leaving home and having a child at a young age. Moreover, unlike his on-screen personas in previous shows, he’s not without blemishes. However, there’s an element of problem-solving that is reminiscent of both Home Improvement and Last Man Standing, which gives the show Shifting Gears a cohesive feel.
At times, it can get quite engaging. It’s mainly about diverse perspectives, and it’s not related to current political matters. Instead, it revolves around humor, shared experiences, and common ground. The goal here is to mend, to rebuild. This is essentially what we’re all about – finding solutions and making improvements.
It’s not possible for Tim Allen to continuously portray the same character in the same show forever. The idea of him being contentedly married with three kids, living his dream life, can become repetitive, regardless of how fantastic the show is. However, the change of pace presented in “Shifting Gears” distinguishes Matt Parker from Tim Taylor and Mike Baxter, and it’s genuinely refreshing. It’s intriguing to watch Allen bring this character to life as a widower, single father, grandfather, and auto shop owner, because there are so many complex aspects to his role.
As I eagerly await the arrival of Season 2 for the captivating series “Shifting Gears,” I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation, knowing that there’s so much more Matt has in store for us. Until then, I encourage fellow enthusiasts to catch up on all the action by streaming the current episodes with a Hulu subscription. Keep your eyes peeled for official announcements regarding Season 2’s release date, which should be coming our way in the near future!
