As a lifelong fan of Tim Allen’s work since the golden days of “Home Improvement,” I must say I am thrilled to see him back in a new sitcom on network television. Having grown up with his character, Tim “The Toolman” Taylor, it’s a nostalgic feeling knowing that he’ll be sharing the screen once more with a fresh and witty cast. The trailer for “Shifting Gears” has me hooked, especially with the addition of Kat Dennings and Seann William Scott in the mix.
Having followed Allen’s career over the past two decades, I can’t help but appreciate his versatility, from voicing Buzz Lightyear to playing Santa Claus in “The Santa Clause” movies. It seems that he has always managed to find interesting projects and characters to take on, making him a beloved figure in the world of entertainment.
I’m particularly intrigued by the plotline involving Matt’s reunion with his daughter Riley and her children. The mystery surrounding the stolen car adds an extra layer of excitement that I can’t wait to unravel. All in all, “Shifting Gears” looks like a fun and engaging sitcom that will bring laughter and heart to our screens, making it a must-watch for fans of Tim Allen and sitcoms alike.
Oh, and if you ever hear someone grunting inexplicably during the commercial breaks this summer, just remember: it’s probably just pure Michigan talking!
Known mainly for his role as Tim “The Toolman” Taylor on the popular show Home Improvement, the humorous actor Tim Allen, who also voiced Buzz Lightyear, is returning to network television as a witty father in a new ABC sitcom titled Shifting Gears. Join us for a moment as we slip another car-related phrase into this introduction, and then let’s dive right into watching the first trailer for this series, which features Allen alongside actress Kat Dennings.
Also featuring the honking talents of a one Mr. Seann William Scott — he of Dude, Where’s My Car? fame, which we are legally obligated to mention anytime Scott and cars are mentioned in tandem — and Daryl “Chill” Mitchell as employees of the classic car restoration business Matt owns, Shifting Gears will focus on the reunion of Allen’s Matt with his daughter Riley (Dennings) and her two kids (played by Maxwell Simkins and Barrett Margolis) as they try to bridge the gap between them left by (spoiler alert?) the dead mother/wife that used to keep the family together. We first saw it thanks to The Hollywood Reporter, by the way. Oh, and it also seems like Riley stole her father’s car when she ran off all those years ago. Did y’all know this was a show focused on cars? (Just checking; I wasn’t sure.)
OK, now you can watch the trailer — it’s just below this header.
When Will ‘Shifting Gears’ Premiere And What Has Tim Allen Been Up To?
I’m excited to share that I’ll be part of the premiere of “Shifting Gears” on Wednesday, January 8, 2025. This project is under the talented leadership of Michelle Nader, who I had the pleasure of collaborating with during our work together on “2 Broke Girls” and “Dollface.”
Michelle isn’t alone in her role as showrunner; she’s joined by a team of exceptional producers. Allen, Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements, Richard Baker, Rick Messina, John Pasquin, Jim Patterson, Bob Daily, and John Amodeo are all part of the production team. I’m proud to say that I am also among them as a producer for this project.
Mike Scully and Julie Thacker Scully, who developed the show initially but left when it was given a full season order, have executive produced the pilot episode. Can’t wait for you all to see it!
Despite spending nearly two decades lending his voice to the renowned Toy Story character and portraying Santa Claus in The Santa Clause films, Tim Allen also starred in the ABC-turned-FOX sitcom Last Man Standing for nine seasons. In this series, he played Mike, a man who is married with three daughters and feels outnumbered as he strives to preserve his masculinity amidst a household dominated by women. The show ran for 194 episodes, making one wonder what Patricia Richardson’s thoughts are on that recurring theme.
For decades, he has been the voice of Michigan’s tourism board, and whenever I encounter his image or hear his voice, I can’t help but think “pure Michigan.” And yes, those peculiar grunts from Home Improvement are hard to forget, as they seem to play during every other commercial break during the summer. However, it’s safe to say that Allen will always be remembered as Buzz Lightyear, given that a new Toy Story movie is currently in production.
Shifting Gears will premiere on Wednesday, January 8, 2025 on ABC.
