As a fan who has followed Tim Blake Nelson‘s career since his debut as the supporting character in “The Incredible Hulk” back in 2008, it’s been an absolute rollercoaster ride to see him finally make his way back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the main villain in “Captain America: Brave New World.
16 years after his debut as the Hulk in “The Incredible Hulk”, Tim Blake Nelson is set to appear on screen as The Leader in “Captain America: Brave New World”. Interestingly, a sequel to the 2008 film would have featured Nelson’s character as the comic book villain against Edward Norton’s Bruce Banner/Hulk. Unfortunately, this didn’t come to fruition, as the actor confirmed. The “Incredible Hulk” now plays a significant role in the near future of the MCU, with the “Captain America” sequel featuring Anthony Mackie prominently in revitalizing its characters.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Tim Blake Nelson reminisced about the years since his supporting role in The Incredible Hulk released in 2008. With plans for a sequel never materializing, the actor felt that his time within the Marvel Cinematic Universe was cut short before it truly took off. Now, however, Nelson emphasizes his excitement about rejoining the MCU, this time as a prominent villain alongside Giancarlo Esposito in Captain America 4.
It’s an immense privilege to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe under the guidance of Kevin Feige, Nate Moore, and Kyana F. Davidson, this time as a villain alongside Giancarlo Esposito in ‘Captain America: Brave New World’. This journey has been incredibly intriguing. I was initially disheartened when it appeared I wouldn’t reprise my role as The Leader, but looking back, I’m grateful for the 16-year wait because it’s added depth to the character.
Tim Blake Nelson Made the Most of It
Despite missing out on a role in the Marvel Studios sequel to The Incredible Hulk, Tim Blake Nelson found himself open to other projects that might not have been available if he had remained deeply tied to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He acknowledges that there were periods of disappointment during the years between his MCU appearances, but ultimately everything turned out for the better. In reality, just a year after 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, Tim Blake Nelson directed Edward Norton in the dark comedy Leaves of Grass in 2009.
During those 16 years, I’ve had the opportunity to experience and accomplish many wonderful things that might not have been available to me if I had taken on the lead villain role in a Hulk sequel two years after Edward Norton’s Hulk. Working with Edward Norton was a delight, and shortly following that, I directed him in a film called Leaves of Grass. Although there were challenging times during those years, I believe everything unfolded as it should have, even though the intervening years were filled with moments of despair.
According to Nelson’s observations, the actor-director was able to delve into creative ventures beyond the Marvel Cinematic Universe because “The Incredible Hulk” didn’t receive a sequel. Notable roles include embodying the indelible title character in “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” where he serenaded audiences with the Academy Award-nominated song “When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings.” He also shines in “Old Henry” and in HBO’s critically acclaimed superhero drama “Watchmen,” where he portrayed Wade Tillman, better known as Looking Glass. As a director, Nelson has worked on projects like “Leaves of Grass,” “The Grey Zone,” and “Anesthesia.
