Tim Burton Explains Why Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis Aren’t in ‘Beetlejuice’ Sequel

As a gamer with a deep affection for Tim Burton’s quirky and imaginative films, I must admit that the absence of Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis from “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” has left me somewhat disheartened. Their characters, Adam and Barbara Maitland, were integral to the original film’s charm and humor. However, understanding Tim Burton’s creative process, I can see why he chose to focus on a different aspect for this sequel.

Tim Burton explained Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis‘ absence from his Beetlejuice sequel this week.

Despite having Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, and Michael Keaton rejoin for the 2024 continuation of the 1988 hit, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis will not be making a comeback in this new installment.

In a conversation with People, Burton expressed that for him, it wasn’t about simply checking off items on a list. Although they played a significant role in the initial project, he was concentrating on a different aspect instead.

In the initial movie, Baldwin and Davis portrayed Adam and Barbara Maitland, a couple who had passed away and found themselves bound to their old Connecticut home. This house was now inhabited by the troublesome Deetz family: Charles (Jeffrey Jones), his daughter Lydia (Ryder), and Delia (O’Hara) – the wife of Charles.

In the movie “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” which captivated viewers at its premiere during the Venice Film Festival on Wednesday, Jenna Ortega portrays Lydia’s teenage daughter who unintentionally reopens the gateway to the spirit world.

“Burton explained further, ‘The timing was crucial for a sequel like this.’ The multi-generational relationship between mother, daughter, and granddaughter drew me in, serving as the core theme. I wouldn’t have been able to create this film back in 1989 or earlier,’ he added.”

Previously, Davis shared with Entertainment Tonight back in April that her explanation for not returning was based on the idea that “ghosts do not grow older.”

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will release in theaters Sept. 6.
