Tina Fey, John Mulaney, Tom Hanks and More Help Induct Martin Short to ‘SNL’ Five-Timers Club

As a longtime SNL enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of this legendary show since its early days, I must say that Saturday’s episode was a nostalgic delight! The return of Tina Fey, John Mulaney, Tom Hanks, Paul Rudd, Melissa McCarthy, and more was like a reunion with old friends. The camaraderie and the shared history between these talented individuals were palpable, making for an evening filled with laughter and reminiscence.

Legendary figures from Saturday Night Live, including Tina Fey, John Mulaney, Tom Hanks, Paul Rudd, Melissa McCarthy, and others, came back to Studio 8H on a Saturday for Martin Short’s induction into the show’s exclusive Five-Timers club.

The exclusive Five-Timers Club of Saturday Night Live recognizes individuals who have hosted the iconic comedy series on five separate occasions. These distinguished members are celebrated with a unique, jacket-style garment as a token of their achievement.

1990 saw Hanks become a club member, and he started Saturday’s episode donning his personal coat. As the cold opening unfolded, a series of familiar faces emerged: Paul Rudd, Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, Kristen Wiig, Scarlett Johansson, Emma Stone, Melissa McCarthy, and John Mulaney. Jimmy Fallon made an entrance as well, playing the role of “jacket boy,” a non-member who traditionally presents the actual jacket.

Hanks explained that the Five-Timers Club was a clever yet lazy method he adopted instead of composing a full monologue.

Fallon conveyed to Short, “I’m thrilled to be a part of this special occasion, so I’d like to hand over to you the authentic Five Timer’s Club jacket tailored specifically for you – it’s a women’s size small.

Upon her arrival, Short commented to Fey that “you’re one of the exceptionally few in Hollywood, a writer who’s appealing enough for the screen.” In response, she playfully retorted, “you’re one of the less extraordinary things in Hollywood, a boisterous man.

Prior to the induction of the actor from Only Murders in the Building, Fey administered a little quiz. “Can you name three present cast members?” she asked. “I’m drawing a blank,” Short replied. “You got it right, and that was the entire test,” Fey playfully quipped.

Johansson’s arrival was signaled by the emergence of her spouse, Colin Jost, who is the “Weekend Update” host on SNL. The crowd gave them a particularly enthusiastic welcome.

The glitzy induction ceremony aligns with the ongoing theme of Saturday Night Live, now in its 50th season since it debuted in 1975. NBC is preparing for a grand celebration in February to mark the show’s anniversary, including a three-hour primetime special on Feb. 16 (which happens to be a Sunday!), a four-part documentary series, a musical documentary, and various other festivities.
