As a long-time iPod user, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia every time I hear about Apple discontinuing the iconic portable music player. The iPod was an integral part of my life for over a decade. I remember saving up allowances and birthday money to buy my first one in middle school, and it opened up a whole new world of music discovery for me.
Approximately two years ago, Apple announced the end of production for the last iPod model, the iPod Touch. The iPod undergoes regular updates, transforming from the original iPod in 2001 to the compact iPod Mini and the screenless iPod Shuffle.
Before Apple stopped producing the iPod completely, the final version with a “scroll wheel” came out in 2014 and was subsequently replaced by the innovative touchscreen model. For those nostalgic about the discontinued portable music player, there’s now an Apple Watch case available.
Labeled as “mini Pod,” this silicone cover shares a resemblance with old-fashioned iPods and fits perfectly over an Apple Watch once taken off its band. Its charm goes beyond appearances, as the rotary wheel on the case synchronizes with the Apple Watch’s digital crown.
As I rotate the scroll on my watch, it feels like turning the crown, giving me a sense of control over navigation. Unfortunately, there’s no button on the scroll itself, so I’ll need to rely on the watch’s touchscreen to make my desired selections.
The small gadget called tinyPod is priced at $80 USD in stores, while there’s also a more affordable version named tinyPod Lite available for $30 USD. The Lite model lacks a scroll wheel and comes with only a simple white silicone cover. However, it may not attract many buyers since it seems to offer fewer features compared to the standard tinyPod.
The tinyPod is now accessible online and can be used with Apple Watch Series 4 and more recent versions. It comes in several sizes such as Ultra 1 and Ultra 2.
