Tituss Burgess will take over the lead role in Oh, Mary! this spring.
Burgess is set to portray Mary Todd Lincoln from March 18th until April 6th for a three-week span. He’s replacing Betty Gilpin, who had assumed the role since January 21st.
Cole Escola, being the author of the play, first played the character of Mary both off-broadway and later during the show’s transfer to broadway.
Burgess, famous for his performances in shows like “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and “Schmigadoon!”, has also graced the stage on Broadway, with roles in productions such as “Moulin Rouge!”, “Guys and Dolls”, “The Little Mermaid”, among others.
(Here I’ve tried to use more conversational language and rearrange the sentence a bit for better flow.)
Burgess exclaimed, ‘Mary’s performance on Broadway left me speechless! Cole Escola is brilliant!’ He added that the show was innovative and unbelievably amusing. He feels a personal connection to the role of Mary Todd Lincoln and is thrilled to be part of the cast at The Lyceum Theatre.
As a fervent admirer, let me share that in an extraordinary twist, I, for one, find myself captivated by the imaginative portrayal of Mary Todd Lincoln’s life, where she emerges as a longing cabaret performer with a penchant for spirits. This innovative production, under the skillful direction of Tony Award nominee Sam Pinkleton, graced the stage on Broadway at the Lyceum Theatre on July 11, 2024.
Besides Gilpin, the play presently features Phillip James Brannon in the role of Mary’s spouse, Chris Renfro as her teacher, Bianca Leigh as her chaperone, Tony Macht as her husband’s aide, and the ensemble is rounded out by Hannah Solow, Martin Landry, and Julian Manjerico.
