As a longtime fan of the Deadpool franchise, I must say that the potential return of TJ Miller as Weasel in Deadpool 4 is nothing short of exhilarating! After all, who wouldn’t want to see more banter between these two unlikely best friends?
Despite their recent apparent estrangement, one member of the former “Deadpool” pair seems optimistic about a future reunion. In an unexpected interview on the SiriusXM radio show “The Bonfire,” TJ Miller hinted at the possibility, stating (via Entertainment Weekly), “We’ve had some conversations recently. I believe he’s in a place right now where I think [reprising his role for ‘Deadpool 4’] would be fantastic.
In the third “Deadpool” movie titled “Deadpool & Wolverine”, T.J. Miller, who portrayed the role of Wade Wilson’s bartender friend Weasel in the first two films, was not present. There were several significant factors behind his absence. One crucial factor was that in December 2017, a woman alleged that Miller had sexually assaulted her during their college years, which was only a few months before the premiere of “Deadpool 2”.
In the film “Deadpool 2,” despite the controversy surrounding him, Miller’s scenes were still included due to Miller denying the accusations. After the movie was released, Miller was arrested on suspicion of making a fake bomb threat. However, these charges were eventually dismissed in 2021. Interestingly, Reynolds announced that Miller wouldn’t feature in the planned “X-Force” film following the incident. Despite this, Reynolds chose not to comment much on Miller’s personal issues, but he did stick to his promise and kept Weasel out of the next movie featuring Deadpool.
A one-sided feud takes a wild turn
Following the debut of “Deadpool 2,” I found myself expressing some dissatisfaction with Reynolds. During a 2022 interview on the “Adam Carolla Show,” I shared my sentiments, explaining that his on-set jabs went too far, even though he was in character as Deadpool. I confided in Carolla that one joke struck a nerve, as he said, “You know what’s great about you, Weasel? You’re not the star, but you do just enough exposition that it’s funny, and then we can leave and get back to the real movie.” I also characterized Reynolds as insecure and didn’t anticipate us ever collaborating again – until now.
It’s noteworthy that Miller’s recent interview on “The Bonfire” isn’t the first hint he’s given about a thawing of the tension between him and Reynolds. Back in October 2022, during an appearance on “The Jim Norton and Sam Roberts Show”, Miller mentioned that they had settled their differences, with Reynolds sending him an apology email for his on-set remarks. He described the entire incident as a “misunderstanding” at that time.
It remains to be seen if Weasel will appear in “Deadpool 4”, as the film has not been officially confirmed yet. However, given the financial success of “Deadpool and Wolverine”, it’s quite possible that a fourth movie is on the horizon.
Reynolds is the real X factor
The main point for consideration is whether Reynolds, who has largely been quiet about his professional relationship with Miller, might decide to involve Weasel again in their collaboration. At this moment, our primary information comes from Miller himself, who undoubtedly would be thrilled to participate in the sequel of the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever made.
By April 2024, it appeared once more that Miller was criticizing Reynolds. On the “Help! with Natalie Cuomo” podcast (as reported by Express Tribune), he suggested indirectly that Reynolds’ newfound fame from the first “Deadpool” movie had altered his previous colleague’s behavior, expressing, “People can become incredibly famous, and then things start to feel strange.
Could there be another joint appearance of Deadpool and Weasel on screen? While anything can happen in the realm of entertainment, without any confirmation from Reynolds regarding Weasel’s return, it appears that TJ Miller might just continue having dialogues with his own self.
