Emin Gün Sirer of Ava Labs explains that Avalanche wasn’t promoted as a direct competitor to Ethereum, despite its capability to host multiple decentralized blockchains independently, which Ethereum does not offer in the same way.
Emin Gün Sirer, the leader of Ava Labs, clarified at the Token2049 conference that Avalanche was never intended to be a rival or “Ethereum killer,” contrary to popular belief. He explained that this label was coined by marketing teams at Consensys, a blockchain technology company founded by Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin. Sirer emphasized that Avalanche has always been supportive of Ethereum instead.
“We’ve always made it clear that Avalanche isn’t intended to replace Ethereum as a ‘killer.’ That label was coined by certain marketing teams at Consensys to hype up Ethereum. Instead, we’ve consistently expressed admiration for Ethereum.”
Emin Gün Sirer
Sirer pointed out that while Ethereum plays an important part in the blockchain world, Avalanche offers a distinct advantage: the ability to create separate blockchains with unique sets of rules, something Ethereum reportedly cannot do.
“Ethereum operates as a solitary blockchain platform, whereas Avalanche functions as a multi-chain system. We have the ability to perform numerous tasks that Ethereum doesn’t support. Among these advantages is the flexibility to let others create their own blockchains based on their unique guidelines – an ability that Ethereum simply does not possess.”

In response to the competition, Sirer highlighted Avalanche’s consensus mechanisms. He pointed out that these protocols are faster than Ethereum’s and mentioned that Avalanche’s method sets us apart, placing us in a league of its own.
I don’t compete against my friends in the Ethereum community, whom I still belong to. Instead, my rivals lie on Wall Street.
Emin Gün Sirer
Sirer emphasized Avalanche’s dedication to progressing blockchain technology by introducing fresh tokens and assets into the blockchain realm.
In August 2022, Crypto Leaks, a well-known whistleblower platform, released detailed information accusing Ava Labs of an unusual arrangement with Freedman Roche, a law firm specializing in crypto matters. The allegation was that Ava Labs compensated the firm with cryptocurrency and company shares to instigate a string of class-action lawsuits against rival companies. At the time, Sirer, a representative from Ava Labs, dismissed these accusations as baseless, insisting that Freedman Roche would never engage in underhanded, unethical, and morally questionable practices as suggested in the sensational videos and articles.
