As a seasoned gamer of international cinema, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming Tokyo International Film Festival! The star-studded jury lineup has me counting down the days till October 28th. The diversity and depth of experience among these esteemed individuals is truly astounding.
The full competition jury for the 37th Tokyo International Film Festival has been revealed.
As a passionate film enthusiast with years of experience in both watching and analyzing films from various cultures, I am thrilled to learn about the esteemed lineup for the 2024 main competition jury. Having followed the careers of Johnnie To, Ildikó Enyedi, Ai Hashimoto, Chiara Mastroianni, and Tony Leung, I feel honored to be a part of this diverse and talented group.
Known globally as a legendary figure in Hong Kong cinema, Leung is celebrated for his action and crime movies. His extensive filmography boasts titles like “Breaking News,” “Exiled,” “Mad Detective,” “Drug War,” and the “Election” series (which includes both “Election” and “Triad Election”). Regularly showcased at international film festivals, Leung’s work has been screened six times at Cannes Film Festival, with two films competing, and he has also had four films compete at the Venice Film Festival.
Ila Enyedi is primarily recognized for crafting and directing the Hungarian drama “On Body and Soul,” which clinched the top honors at both the Berlin Film Festival and Sydney Film Festival, and was further nominated for the category of Best International Feature Film at the 2018 Academy Awards. More recently, Enyedi’s work “The Story of My Wife” (starring Léa Seydoux) debuted at Cannes in 2021, while Tony Leung has been tapped to feature in her upcoming production titled “Silent Friend.”
As a gamer, I’ve been quite impressed by Ai Hashimoto’s role as an ambassador for the Tokyo Film Festival in both 2021 and 2022. She’s gained my attention through her work in projects like “The Kirishima Thing” and Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Netflix geisha drama, “The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House,” which is set to release in 2023.
Completing the jury lineup is French actress Chiara Mastroianni, who comes from an illustrious acting background. She is the daughter of Marcello Mastroianni and Catherine Deneuve. Over the years, she has established herself in French cinema with notable roles in films such as Christophe Honoré’s “Beloved” and “Making Plans For Lena”, Claire Denis’ “Bastards”, and more recently, she was recognized for her exceptional performance in Honoré’s “On a Magical Night.” This performance earned her a Cesar Award nomination and the prestigious best actress award at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section.
The 2024 Tokyo Film Festival runs Oct. 28 through Nov. 6.
