As a lifelong fan of football and Tom Brady, I must admit that I find myself both entertained and intrigued by the ongoing drama surrounding the legendary quarterback. The man has been under the microscope for years, so it’s no surprise that his transition to broadcasting would also attract some controversy.
It’s safe to say Tom Brady has probably faced a lot of fan critiques, going beyond even the most brutal jokes from the “Tom Brady Roast”. Known as the best quarterback ever by many, this means that fans of nearly 32 NFL teams may not be his biggest fans. Now that he’s retired, Tom Brady has moved to the broadcasting booth. It’s understandable that some would question his abilities in his new role, but during one game, his commentary might have violated the league’s rules.
On Sunday evening, Fox broadcasted the game between the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers, with Kevin Burkhardt and Tom Brady providing commentary. In the second quarter, NFL officials in New York’s replay center controversially ejected Detroit Lions safety Brian Branch for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Green Bay’s Bo Melton. Here’s the play and Tom Brady’s reaction to it:
Whether the New York office made the right call about the ejection could be argued for days — and believe me, it will be — but the issue at hand involves Tom Brady specifically. The retired QB recently became a part owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, and therefore there are rules Brady must follow in his role as a broadcaster. One of those rules states he’s prohibited from publicly criticizing game officials or other clubs. Many fans thought he did just that in his commentary of the Lions-Packers game, as they wrote on X (Twitter):
- Whether it’s the correct call or not, definitely notable to hear Brady criticize an officiating decision, something he’s technically forbidden to do as a partial owner of the Raiders 👀 – njh287
- Tom Brady wasn’t allowed to criticize the officials I thought as a part of his ownership deal. That surely sounded like criticism after the ejection. – houseofburgh412
- I thought Tom Brady isn’t allowed to criticize refs under the terms of his minority ownership. Also heard him speak positively of the Raiders when he was talking about Jacobs. Hmmm – buttnerme
- So much for Tom Brady not being allowed to criticize NFL refs….. Clearly disagreed with that ejection. – PatsBuzz
Is Tom Brady likely to face consequences for his remarks? It seems that the interpretation of the rule will be crucial, as there’s a distinction between Brady expressing disagreement with the referees and criticizing them. Here’s how the Fox commentator put it: “It comes down to the specific wording of the rule, because, unintentionally, we can see that there’s a difference between Tom Brady disagreeing with the refs and criticizing them.
I don’t love that call at all. I mean, obviously it’s a penalty, but to me that has to be serious intent in a game like this.
According to ESPN’s report, the rule implies that Tom Brady can express disagreement with an on-air call, but he could face financial penalties or even suspensions if his criticism crosses a certain unspecified line. In other words, it’s not clear where the boundary is drawn for what constitutes going “too far.
It’s intriguing to observe what happens next, as this incident could potentially be a warning to the high-priced broadcaster about his response towards future decisions he disagrees with.
