It seems like Tom Cruise is really living a life reminiscent of the movie ‘Final Destination’, constantly dodging death with his daring film stunts. For instance, the latest installment in the ‘Mission: Impossible‘ series, titled ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’, reportedly includes an underwater scene that director Christopher McQuarrie described as “terrifying”.
In an interview with Empire prior to the release of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning on May 23, 2025, McQuarrie discussed the underwater stunt that was filmed in a massive 8.5 million-liter water tank. This scene features Cruise navigating the remains of the Sevastopol submarine from the previous movie. The set could be rotated, and McQuarrie described it as a particularly difficult and scary moment for Cruise to film, as he endured some intense physical strain during the process.
In a spinning structure laden with rubble, your task was to create an atmosphere of utter chaos and instability, yet one that could be replicated consistently for Tom to maneuver through safely. Given his skills, Tom Cruise is the right man for the job, and indeed, the mission has been successfully completed.
In the upcoming movie titled The Final Reckoning, which is tentatively thought to be the last film in the extended series, Tom Cruise will resume his character as IMF agent Ethan Hunt. However, it’s important to note that there’s a possibility for his return in future installments. Alongside Cruise, we have new additions Nick Offerman and Katy O’Brian, along with recurring cast members like Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, and Vanessa Kirby.
Tom Cruise Had to Breathe His Own Carbon Dioxide
During the stunt for The Final Reckoning, Cruise faced not only being whirled around underwater and hit with debris but also an additional challenge: holding his breath and inhaling carbon dioxide. Excessive CO2 can cause issues such as headaches, dizziness, and confusion, which aren’t ideal when attempting a challenging scene while submerged in water.
While exercising, I’m essentially re-inhaling the carbon dioxide I exhale. This can accumulate within my body and impact my muscle function. It requires mental focus and determination to push through this and stay fully engaged during the activity.
In yet another daring feat, Cruise miraculously emerged unscathed after skirting death once more. This isn’t the first time he’s pulled off such risky stunts; in fact, his resume includes hanging from a moving airplane, biking off a cliff into a parachute descent, leaping from the roof of the Stade de France, and scaling the world’s tallest structure.
Experience firsthand how the underwater scenes seamlessly unfold when “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” premieres in theaters on May 23. To get yourself ready before its release, you can watch “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning” which is currently streaming on Prime Video, Paramount+, or MGM+. If you’d like to reminisce about where it all started, the original 1996 action classic is also available for streaming on Paramount+.
